Director Corporate Development AeroVironment Simi Valley

We are currently seeking a Director of Corporate Development to join our team.

AeroVironment’s Corporate Development team is responsible for identifying strategic growth areas and developing M&A and other strategic deal priorities for the company to capture those strategic growth opportunities. We deliver global growth acceleration via disciplined strategic deal execution, with a focus on executing transactions that help access technologies, products, and markets to accelerate achievement of corporate revenue and profitability goals.
This role will partner closely with AeroVironment’s Executive Leadership Team, Corporate Strategy, and Business Unit leadership teams across sales, marketing, engineering, product management, and business operations to identify strategic growth areas and develop M&A and other strategic deal priorities for the company across its business units. This role is expected to contribute to all aspects of the corporate development process including market research, competitive analysis, deal sourcing, target approach, financial analysis and modeling, market and company evaluation, due diligence, definitive documents negotiation, deal closing, integration and deal performance monitoring.

This is a critical business role within the company with high visibility to the Executive Leadership Team. This role reports to the VP of Strategic Development.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities Include:

Working with AeroVironment’s Executive Leadership Team, business leaders, legal and finance teams, and operations teams, lead of all aspects of Corporate Development projects and processes including identification, investigation, approach, evaluation, due diligence, negotiation of definitive documents, closing and integration of strategic deals. Strategic deals may include a range of deal structures from asset and equity acquisitions to joint ventures, joint development and/or marketing agreements, licensing agreements, divestitures and other deal types. Specific responsibilities will include the following:


M&A:

Identify inorganic growth opportunities for the Company

Competitive and Market Landscape Analysis - conduct primary analysis for new markets/white space.

Pipeline Development – Monitor Landscape for universe of potential targets for the Company. Working with Business Unit teams evaluate and prioritize opportunities and targets

Develop and execute target approach strategy to initiate strategic deal discussions

Develop target deal investment thesis

Drive due diligence work plan, lead development of post-closing integration plans.

Deal Execution - Move targets through stage gate process to closure.

Project Management – Lead post-merger integration planning after successful acquisitions and other strategic deal types

Opportunity Identification and Execution:

Working with Business Unit teams, develop strategic insights and identify new growth areas for the Company aligned with the core trends driving the Company’s end markets.

Evaluate and prioritize the pipeline of new growth opportunities aligned with these trends and markets, both with organic investments and through M&A/Partnerships.

Develop and drive these opportunities from identification and business case development through early stage execution.

Transition and manage these opportunities through go/no-go and make/buy decision-making

Growth Strategy:

Identify and develop strategic initiatives that will enable long term growth.

Identify and drive large scale, strategic opportunities for the Company, both domestically and internationally, and develop actionable plan to execute on these opportunities.

Project manager for multiple strategic initiatives, and thoroughly identify and detail all problems, organize cross-functional teams, and propose and manage timely analyses with predetermined milestones.

Establish well supported solutions with specific recommendations that will enable the Executive Leadership Team to make critical go/no go decisions.

Own and drive these strategic initiatives through concept, management alignment, and execution using a defined project management approach

Professional Qualifications:

Deal Sheet must include leadership of or significant participation in multiple strategic deals of at least $25Mdeal value including acquisitions, joint ventures, joint development agreements, and technology licenses

At least 5 years of technology investment banking or corporate development experience within a technology-heavy company

Global experience executing deals in North America, Europe and East Asia

Consulting Experience (preferred but not required): a minimum of two years of consulting with a top-tier firm, having worked on growth strategy projects and conducted strategic due diligence on multiple cases.

Analytical Rigor: the ability to run highly complicated quantitative and parametric financial analysis in a defect-free manner.

Experience managing large scale due diligence and post-Closing integration projects

Structured and Logical Thinking: the ability to dissect a problem in a structured approach and quickly form a hypothesis against which to run test analysis.

Powerful Communication: the ability to communicate persuasively, both verbally and on paper.

Education: an undergraduate degree in electrical, mechanical, or similar engineering, and an MBA (or advanced degree) from a top school.

Experience in engineering or operational or strategy role at an automotive, aerospace, or industrial company.

Personal Qualifications:

This person will also need to be a self-motivated, high-energy individual who can easily function in a high demand, performance-driven environment.

The candidate selected for this position will be a creative thinker who is intellectually curious with a demonstrated interest in learning.

He/she must be accustomed to working on multiple tasks in parallel. This professional must demonstrate strong leadership skills, best demonstrated by the individual’s ability to gain credibility with team members and senior management.
