VMware is recruiting a Senior Director of Standards, who will lead VMware’s Standards programs within the corporate Office of the CTO. This individual will be responsible for evolving, driving and communicating VMware’s Standards strategy. They will lead a small team, leverage the broader VMware technology community, and partner and collaborate across the company. They will use their experience, acumen and diplomatic skills to position VMware appropriately within industry, national and international Standards bodies, and use their communication skills to best position the company in with our partners and customers. This individual will report to Paul Strong, Chief Technology Officer, Global Field.
Watch: Career Advice The Senior Director of Standards will be responsible for the following Standards related activities:
• Play a leading role in defining/evolving VMware’s Standards strategy.
• Participate in, and where required lead, various industry and national standards organizations’ governance bodies and/or working groups.
• Work with US National Institute of Standards and Technology and support VMware’s Federal team on important US government agency standards issues.
• Serve as the chief technical spokesperson for VMware’s Standards strategy both internally and externally.
• Participate in significant technical keynote speaking engagements; write blogs; communicate externally with customers and partners, as well as press and analysts
• Work with press, analysts, customers and partners representing VMware’s overall vision, how standards play their part, and providing significant technical detail.
• Engage with VMware’s field employees, customers, and partners to explain our technology vision in a manner that helps build commitment to this vision and drive adoption of our technology solutions, specifically around our industry Standards priorities
• Track and coordinate Standards engagement and activities across VMware.
• Drive and influence internal technology decisions as they relate to VMware’s Standards strategy.
• Manage a small team of Standards architects.
As a member of the Office of the CTO, this individual will also:
• Continually assess the impact of emerging technologies against strategic business needs and interpret business value
• Champion new technologies to drive innovation across the organization and to deliver improved product development. This will require partnering with the various VMware business units.
• Synthesize examples of where VMware’s solutions are delivering meaningful business value to our customers
• Build C-level relationships with VMware’s customer and partners that result in deeper loyalty to VMware and broader adoption of VMware’s solutions
• Expand VMware’s influence with key industry thought leaders
• Play an active leadership role as a member of VMware’s R&D and Field technical communities
• Engage with VMware’s product engineering teams to help drive product roadmaps and innovation
Desired Domain Expertise:
• 15+ years of deep technical experience in areas covered by VMware’s product sets, especially server virtualization, networking and security, and Cloud management.
• 5-10 years of software systems, and standards, design, architecture and implementation experience, and an understanding of the challenges in developing complex software solutions.
• Rich Industry Standards background. DMTF, IETF, OASIS, ISO/IEC, ETSI or related Industry organizations preferred.
• Good understanding of, and ideally engagement in Open Source communities.
• Customer facing experience, including C-level interactions, where it is not about selling the product, but rather about establishing thought leadership credentials.
• The successful candidate should have an industry wide reputation and visibility.
• Recognized industry leadership externally, i.e. they should have a reputation within the IT community as a thought leader and/or leading implementer
• End user customer experience sufficient to establish empathy and credibility
• Strong communicator, diplomat, collaborative, persuasive, evangelist
• Passionate, dedicated team player capable of selling technological vision to all levels and someone who is excited about the opportunities ahead for VMware
• Ability to effectively integrate best practices of technology and business. The ability to resolve problems and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Network of contacts throughout the technical and business community is critical

Education
• BS Degree in Business Management/Engineering/Sciences; MBA is highly desirable
• Advanced degrees or commensurate demonstrated achievement.
