Research & Development Director - Toxicology - PepsiCo - Plano

Job Summary :

This individual will lead the Scientific Affairs function for the PepsiCo Americas Foods (PAF) business, reporting into the Global Scientific Affairs Senior Director. This business includes iconic brands such as Lay's, Quaker and Sabritas. Bringing expertise in scientifically sound and robust chemical hazard and safety assessment, this individual will deliver actionable technical input to progress PAFs new product development initiatives and research agenda, inclusive of ingredients, products processes, and packaging. In addition the individual will provide technical expertise and management to identify and resolve issues for the company. The role will also build and maintain an external network of experts and engage with trade associations and scientific institutions to advance PAF's business goals.

Accountabilities :

Lead the delivery of robust and scientifically sound safety assessments (chemical focus) to the PAF business pertaining to ingredients, products, packaging and processes.
Enable the regulatory compliance of new materials through delivery of the appropriate safety assessment data.
Work collaboratively across the Global Scientific Affairs organization to input to the development of safety assessments, and drive implementation for the PAF organization. Leverage best practices across the PAF region.
Represent Scientific Affairs to the PAF business leadership.
Deliver technical expertise to support resolution of issues / incidents.
Build an external network of experts to enable PAFs' business initiatives.
Work with external organizations, notably trade associations and scientific institutes, to drive science-based policies which support PAFs' strategic direction.
Actively identify and contribute to the management of emerging issues of a Food Safety / Regulatory nature which are relevant to the PAF business.
Proactively identify the need for risk-based due diligence programs, and works cross-functionally to establish them.
Provide leadership to, and manage the development of PAF scientific affairs team members.
Adhere to PepsiCo's standards and those of the appropriate regulatory environment.

Qualifications / Requirements :
Higher level degree, PhD preferred, in Toxicology, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Food Safety or other related science. Board certification is desirable.
8-10+ years in the food industry (preferred), or other consumer goods company.
Demonstrated influencing skills coupled with the ability to understand business strategies and translate them into scientific programs.
Experience engaging with trade associations and scientific institutes to drive science-based deliverables aligned to business strategies.
Knowledge of the regulatory environment in the US - other regions within the Americas are also desirable.
Ability to effectively build networks within and external to the company.
Proven ability to work cross-functionally.
An understanding of the public perception challenges faced by the food industry.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills. In particular, a demonstrated ability to explain complex science to non-scientists and business leaders.
Experience managing a team of technical experts.
