ABB is seeking a Director of Operations, who will be is responsible for leading the operations team, driving operational excellence, quality and overall business performance of the site while maintaining the highest standards for safety and integrity.
Identifies, defines, strategizes for, drives, and optimizes the implementation, maturity assessment and improvement of all management areas and processes related to Operations.
Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
General - Has overall responsibility and accountability for the key aspects of revenue and the operations cost budget, business integrity and OHS according to ABB group’ and country practices. Will interface and collaborate with other PMU Ops Managers and functional managers within the US and Americas HUB. Ensures resources meet requirements and that overall strategic operational objectives are fulfilled.
Oversees all functions related to PMU Operations including Sales Order management and Engineering; Order Entry; Manufacturing and facilities; Supply Chain; Production Planning; Logistics; Quality and OpEx; Production Planning and Fulfillment; Business processes; Industrial Engineering, Applications engineering and Applications lab.
Ensures adequately skilled resources are appropriately allocated across all areas of operations strictly according to demand to efficiently produce approved products and associated direct activities on time and within established quality specifications and procedures to meet budgeted revenue and gross margins.
Strategic - Formulates and develops the Operations management policies, programs and projects that guide the PMU in creating and sustaining the local Operational plan. Optimizes manufacturing and business processes that contribute towards the achievement of the Hub/BU strategy and operational objectives. Creates a clear Vision for their organization based on the overall business goals of the site, BU and Americas Hub with an eye on the future including Industry 4.0; Factories of future; Digital and Automation.
Communication - Directs and monitors local department managers within operations to accomplish goals of the PMU budget, consistent with established manufacturing and safety procedures. Acts as liaison between PMU General Manager/Factory Department Heads and Hub/BU operations to inform personnel of communications, decisions, policies and all matters that affect their performance, attitudes and results. Communicates results to PMU General Manager and Hub/BU operations, escalating issues as they arise and work with necessary owners to develop countermeasures.
Seeks regular feedback and improvement opportunities from operational teams through GEMBA, tool box training, staff meetings etc.
Continuous Improvement - Identifies, recommends and implements programs and projects to improve lead time; customer on time delivery; quality; productivity; cost reduction; scrap and rework. Directs the establishment, implementation and maintenance of production Operations standards within the manufacturing site. Initiates, directs and coordinates various programs essential to leverage manufacturing Operations synergies and processes across the Hub/BU.
Knowledge Transfer - Captures, communicates and replicates successes and best practices across the different manufacturing departments, driving standardization and consistency of approach.
Health, safety and environment - Maintains compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations while monitoring and reporting progress and results. Assesses risks and safety hazards and implements plans to ensure people and equipment safety. Drives and maintains the PMU culture of safety within their organization.
Performance Management - Develops goals and metrics to lead the organization to the highest level of operational performance, in line with Hub/BU operations goals, while optimizing quality, cost and cash throughout manufacturing operations, and ensuring on time delivery.
Ensures that the organization takes an overall value chain perspective to meet customer expectations on quality, service levels and lead time and has a full understanding of and promotes a culture of continuous improvement behaviors, methodologies and processes.
People leadership and development - Ensures, with the support of HR, that the local manufacturing team, is sustainably staffed, developed and directed to enable effective leadership, support and coaching on improvement projects and to provide a career development path for future operational leaders.
Management of Partnerships - Maintain key supplier relations with respect to manufacturing equipment, technological and capacity subcontractors as well as suppliers related to direct material in cooperation with Hub/BU supply and value chain.
Requirements
Basic qualifications:
Bachelors Degree and 10 years of manufacturing/operations experience.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree and 10 years of manufacturing/operations experience, preferably in a process-oriented operations and/or related industry.
- Well-versed with MS Office and statistical tools; understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (e.g. SAP).
- Strong analytical skills to deal with data, statistical analyses and problem solving.
- Lean Six Sigma advanced technical knowledge (L6S certification a plus).
- Lean manufacturing expertise.
