We're seeking a Principal Technical Program Manager to project and program manage large initiatives and campaigns within Infrastructure. In this role you will be responsible for scoping and delivering on large projects and managing portfolios of related projects. Responsibilities include collection of business and systems requirements from internal and external customers, writing specifications, driving project schedules from design to release, and managing the production launch.
You will lead and coordinate design/implementation efforts to develop optimal solutions. You will be expected to make appropriate trade-offs to optimize time-to-deliver, clearly communicate goals, roles, responsibilities, and desired outcomes to internal cross-functional and remote project teams.
The right candidate will possess a strong program management background, will have demonstrated experience leading medium to large projects, and will have a well-rounded technical background in current web technologies. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. As a Principal TPM, you will anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints. An ability to take large, complex projects and break them down into manageable pieces, develop functional specifications, then deliver them in a successful and timely manner is expected. Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role.
This role works with teams worldwide to define strategy and requirements, and in leading cross functional development teams from design through delivery, managing the timelines for all supporting software and services to support the various platform projects.
While you’ll be able to use existing Amazon systems when possible, you’ll be working on hard, challenging problems that have no off-the-shelf solutions within Amazon, and most likely haven’t been solved anywhere else in the world. You should be comfortable building prototypes, challenging assumptions and thinking of creative ways to tackle problems.
The Principal TPM will also be responsible for setting program standards and expectations, leading and mentoring other TPMs within our organization. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable digging into business requirements and product planning as well as drilling into technical architecture and design.
Basic Qualifications
Qualified candidates have experience defining projects and features, collecting requirements, writing detailed functional and test specifications, coordinating efforts to scope, schedule, as well as analyzing cost/benefit of decision and communicating results throughout the organization.
7+ years of Technical Program Management experience in a related industry
Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Experience in creating and managing complex, cross-team project plans; prior success in driving execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams in support of business goals
1-3 years of coding experience in Java, C++, and Python or Perl
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field
A first-hand working knowledge of current web technologies
Experience with business applications such as Word, Excel and Project
Preferred Qualifications
Hands on experience with Agile methodologies and proven leadership skills to guide other TPMs
Successful track record of coordinating between multiple project stakeholders, technical program managers, and software development teams
Project/program management certification
