Job Description
The incumbent manages and facilitates relationship with the Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons, related to the National Cancer Database, the primary data source for studies on patterns of care and outcomes. She/he supervises and evaluates two doctoral-level investigators working on patterns of care and outcomes. In addition to developing health services research projects based on existing databases, the incumbent will have the opportunity to initiate research projects requiring primary data collection, and provide input to ACS’ initiatives to eliminate disparities and improve the quality of cancer patient care on a national level. Active collaboration with colleagues in ACS’ intramural research programs and other departments, as well as researchers in academic and public health institutions (e.g., Emory, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is anticipated. He or she assists the VP in providing operational leadership related to health services research.
Manage and facilitate relationship with the Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons, related to the National Cancer Database.
Supervise two doctoral level staff working in patterns of care and outcomes.
Provide strategic direction and leadership within SHSR.
Design and carry out studies on patterns of care and outcomes to provide evidence for ACS’ mission and policy and programmatic activities.
Prepare scientific articles for publications in peer review journals.
Collaborate with other researchers at ACS and at academic institutions and assist in advancing the field of cancer health services research
Serve as public spokesperson on the results of health services research studies to National Home Office departments, volunteers, scientific community, media, etc., as needed.
Identify opportunities to extend, enrich, and use of health services resources available to ACS through public use data sets, data linkage, or collection of new data. PhD or MD equivalent degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Medicine, Health Services Research, or a related field, and at least five years of experience in public health and health outcomes research is required. Ten or more years of experience, clinical training or experience and experience working with cancer registries are preferred.
Experience working with a variety of large health care databases and at least one statistical analysis software system, preferably SAS
Knowledge of statistical analysis methods, including regression and survival analysis.
Demonstrated excellent analytic, conceptual, and quantitative/qualitative methodology skills and strong attention to detail
Substantial record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
