Job Description: • 2-minute read •
The Director of Operations, Systems & Technology will lead the business side of one of our company’s largest and most critical initiatives – the design and roll out of our proprietary, home-grown internal technology tools. A close collaboration across Operations, Product Management, and Engineering, this workstream is key to scaling our rapidly-growing nationwide fulfillment center network and driving our competitive advantage. Our internal software tools manage the forecasting, purchasing, storage, preparation, and shipment of fresh ingredients every week, enabling our company to deliver over 8 million meals nationwide monthly. The nature of our business poses unique supply chain and logistical challenges that require purpose-built solutions and data analysis.

Managers on our Operations team have been hard at work over the last two years collaborating with the Product team on gathering and prioritizing business requirements and iterating through wireframes, owning business-side QA, and conducting trainings and launches with our fulfillment center teams. These managers and their growing teams will report to the person in this newly-created role. The ideal candidate has experience creatively dreaming up internal operations software and adeptly leading a team to execute upon a shared vision. We’re looking for a seasoned multi-tasker who can partner with senior stakeholders in Product, Engineering and our Fulfillment Centers to steer projects and strategy at Blue Apron’s brisk and demanding start-up pace.

About The Role

Our fulfillment center operations are half manufacturing and half distribution. You’ll master our business inside and out, becoming an expert in how all of our teams operate. You'll ask the tough questions and advocate for the right solution based on your deep understanding of our unique operation.
This is a cross-functional project. Teamwork will be critical as you partner with our talented Product, Engineering, and Fulfillment teams to iterate through ideas and craft roadmaps to address our top business priorities. Along with the directors in these areas you’ll own responsibility for galvanizing our large interdepartmental team around project plans and delivering against them on tight deadlines.
The software we build is only impactful if we prepare and empower our thousands of team members to use it. Oversee launches of tools in our fulfillment centers from coast to coast. Work hand-in-hand with Product, Engineering, and our general managers to train users, adapt our physical infrastructure and hardware, and roll out new processes.
Our tools capture data that we harness to run our operation effectively and efficiently. Develop intuitive dashboards that track performance of key performance metrics and help our managers advance the efficiency and efficacy of our fulfillment centers.
Partner with, learn from, and present to stakeholders of all different backgrounds and seniority levels. You’ll spend time on the road in our fulfillment centers learning how we can improve users’ experience and the company’s KPI performance using Blue Apron’s proprietary technology. Back in our NYC headquarters you’ll routinely collaborate with and pitch to senior peers and executives.
Requirements

Bachelor's degree or higher with strong academic results.
8+ years of professional experience with 4+ years’ experience launching and integrating internal user-facing technology tools that run a business, e-commerce or otherwise. Experience rolling out WMS or fulfillment software strongly preferred; experience leading a team of many a must.
Passion and vision for using technology-based solutions to solve the world’s most complicated operations problems. Radical, creative thinking paired with strong execution – ability to both envision a world different than the status quo and to articulate a clear path to get there.
Exceptional interpersonal skills; must build strong relationships with partners. High degree of empathy.
Data-driven, analytical, and tech-savvy. Ability to derive business KPIs from our software and partner across the business to move the needle on these numbers. Excel mastery a must; experience working directly or indirectly with SQL, VBA, Ruby or other querying and programming languages preferred.
Proven execution capabilities. Willingness to get hands dirty and do whatever it takes to ensure success. Ability to work under pressure, owning and meeting critical deadlines.
Effective and concise written and verbal communicator with executive presentation skills.
Ability to effectively manage multiple complex cross-departmental projects simultaneously and in organized fashion.
Uncanny attention to detail. You have a strong intuition and nothing gets past your sniff test.
Ability to thrive in an unstructured, fast-moving and constantly evolving high growth environment. Experience working for a start-up a plus.
