The primary purpose of this position is to lead, design, implement and communicate U.S. health and welfare benefit programs (medical, dental, vision, wellness, life, disability, etc.) that are aligned with the business strategy. Collaboration with benefits delivery leadership and the in-house actuarial team will be key to ensure the successful delivery of such programs in achieving the desired outcomes of the plan (employee satisfaction, engagement, cost effectiveness, productivity, etc.). The Director is also responsible for ensuring alignment with HR leadership and other stakeholders including finance, operations leadership, unions, procurement, and corporate communications.

Lead the development and implementation of United's policies and strategies for employee health and welfare benefits and other ancillary programs, designed to simplify the usage of benefits, improve employee health, increase productivity, and manage costs more effectively.
Prepare and present recommendations to human resources and other leaders related to new offerings and changes to existing programs.
Working within the constraints of our collective bargaining agreements, identify and implement initiatives to improve clinical outcomes
Effect changes that begin to shift the culture towards one of health and wellness and improves the employee value-proposition, helping to position United as a "best place to work".
Work with actuarial team and financial reporting teams to monitor trends and advise management of the impact on United's programs and strategies.
Collaborate with stakeholders in other divisions to ensure alignment and “buy-in” to program goals and outcomes
Partner with Unions to build more effective working relationships and to directly address concerns as they arise.
Oversee performance of various third party administrators to ensure compliance with all policies, service level agreements, laws and regulations and to ensure excellent customer service for all United participants.
Lead a team of benefits professionals in developing and implementing effective strategies for the company.
Coach and develop individual team members to foster growth and learning.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s Degree required
MBA or Master's in a related field preferred
Certification
Professional benefits certification such as Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) preferred
Knowledge/Skills (Required)
High level of expertise in subject matter related to employee benefit programs
Excellent organizational skills

Experience (Required)
Approximately 10 or more years of progressive experience in leading major enterprise-wide health and welfare benefit programs
Experience with benefits in a labor union environment and partnering/negotiating with labor unions
Demonstrated leadership in strategy development and effective execution of programs to deliver business results
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and maintain alignment with other stakeholders
Record of success in developing solutions in health and welfare and wellness arenas
Experience in a large, complex, global, corporate environment
Experience creating and leading teams, motivating, coaching and developing high performers
Experience (Preferred)
HR/Benefits Consulting and/or benefits experience within the airline industry
