Director Financial Institutions Credit Scotiabank - New York City

Job Description:
Incumbent will lead the credit adjudication function for the US Credit Risk – Financial Institutions, covering banks and other counterparties. In conjunction with the Head of US Credit Risk, this role will adjudicate on specific credits within limits, and take over limit/out of policy proposals to the appropriate Credit Committee.
Incumbent will be responsible for contributing to sound asset growth and profits of the Bank by ensuring credit requests are properly analyzed and adjudicated, ensuring requests are realistic and effective decisions/recommendations are made within reasonable time frames; and supporting documentation that provides adequate protection for the portfolio is provided.

Incumbent will partner with business line stakeholders and be perceived as a trusted advisor.

The Incumbent Will Also

exhibit a high degree of industry knowledge and expertise and ensure the ongoing quality of the credit portfolio;
liaise with and maintain a strong working relationship with marketing and execution personnel with banking units and credit units;
advise on deal structuring, credit risk mitigation for derivatives, loans and auxiliary products
ensure acceptable quality in his/her assigned Credit portfolio by:
a.continuously monitoring the quality of the assigned portfolio; recommends actions to minimize losses;
b.validating analysis/recommendations of subordinates to ensure appropriate risks have been considered and that proper documentation is in place;
ensure sound decision making within assigned portfolio through competent and timely analysis, presentation and adjudication of applications;
monitor the quality and aggregation of assigned portfolio on a geographic, industry and customer basis, and recommending as required appropriate corrective action to minimize losses and maximize recoveries.
alerting the Head of US Credit Risk to unsatisfactory trends and agreeing on appropriate corrective action.
conduct industry analysis and limit guideline policy reviews for submission to senior management, including preparation of Board level reports;
coaching junior staff in the development of their adjudication skills and in their ability to handle more complex situations as risk management professionals.

Qualifications

minimum 10+ years of combined experience with counterparty credit risk management and have earned an MBA Degree, and either their FRM or CFA designation.
very good understanding of traded products (including derivatives and securities financing transactions) and lending products.
seasoned knowledge of the lending policies, procedures and practices of Scotiabank and its US entities.
superior understanding of credit and the structures and protections required for corporate credit and the incumbent will have very good knowledge of legal documentation (ISDA, GMSLA, Loans, etc.) and solid working knowledge of the accounting and regulatory environments relating to the financial service industry.

The Incumbent Must Have

•the ability to debate the merits and vulnerabilities of credit applications with Banking and Senior Credit Committee, approving/declining or providing recommendations as appropriate which requires highly developed communications skills.
•Strong strategic influencing skills and relationship building skills to deal with senior executives, banking customers and other stakeholders.
•Strong people management skills with demonstrated commitment to coaching and developing staff.
