Director Transactions Strategic Alliances Novartis Cambridge

Job Description:
The Director/Executive Director, Transactions will drive deal negotiations and transactions with external academic institutions and biotech/pharmaceutical companies by understanding the terms that are required to secure mutually beneficial agreements.

Responsibilities
Intuitively grasping the essence of a particular transaction, the Director/Executive Director, Transactions will structure and close deals based on prior experience with a variety of deal structures. They will work closely with the Strategic Alliances leadership team to establish protocols, coach and mentor Strategic Alliance colleagues in the process of negotiation, deal structuring and transaction closing in concert with the larger goals of the Global Strategic Alliances group of NIBR. The Director/Executive Director, Transactions will work in a cross-functional team with the Strategic Alliances Search and Evaluation group and other colleagues in Finance, Legal and the Novartis Pharma organization.

Responsibilities include:

•Driving internal consensus on potential alliances before discussions proceed to negotiation phase
•Structuring and negotiating deals
•Coordinating cross-functional teams that include corporate and patent lawyers and functional area financial managers
•Presenting strategic rationale for transactions to senior-level management, including deal structure and valuation
•Interfacing and liaising with the Novartis Pharma and Alcon global business development and licensing groups as appropriate
•Interfacing and liaising with the Novartis Group Mergers and Acquisitions team as appropriate
•Leading deal teams from negotiations to deal closure
•Contributing to the development of a strategy for Business Development and Strategic Alliances for NIBR

Requirements

The Director/Executive Director, Transactions will possess an in-depth knowledge of the pharma/biotech arena, be facile with a wide variety of deal structures and have a demonstrated track record of closing transactions. Experienced in partnering with biotechnology companies and/or academic/research institutions, the Director/Executive Director, Transactions will possess superior analytical, strategic and communication skills. Well organized, detail oriented, with a strong sense of urgency, they will be a team player who is comfortable working in a global matrix system and exerting leadership through strong influencing skills. A creative thinker, the Director/Executive Director, Transactions will establish innovative business solutions and concepts with a talent for consensus-building, strong negotiation skills, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Considered reliable, pro-active, hands-on and able to manage projects with autonomy, they will understand how to influence people and situations in an R&D setting. Genuinely passionate about science and NIBR’s mission, the Director/Executive Director, Transactions will have proven coaching and mentoring experience, strong written and verbal communication skills and exceptional presentation skills. REQUIRED YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 12+ years (at least eight years of experience in a licensing, strategic planning or business development role) EDUCATION: Ph.D., M.D. or strong scientific background with other advanced degree (M.B.A., J.D.)
