Director - Creative - NBC Universal - Universal City
Job description
Serves as the creative guardian of placemaking, area development and other environmental elements that affect the visual and emotional aspects of the guest experience. Responsible for the design, design execution and monitoring of the creative process for all placemaking, area development and non-attraction projects for Universal Studios Hollywood (USH) and CityWalk (CW). Responsibilities include participation in all phases of development (conceptualization through completion) with specific oversight of the design phases, assurance that visual environments are consistent with design intent, and adherence to quality/brand integrity standards.
Serves as representative of the Creative Studio at Universal Parks &Resorts (UPR) and liaison to the Creative Studio on behalf of USH/CW. Engages routinely with senior executives of the operating team including the President/COO of USH/CW. Supported by a Production Designer and Graphic Designer and works in conjunction with the Director of Architecture & Engineering.
Works in conjunction with Director of Design Services on the implementation of all placemaking, area development and non-attraction projects to establish project priorities and strategies. Participates in the development of project budgets and schedules, the identification of resources and the communication of appropriate information to the various business units or divisions.
Design Director collaborates with Attraction Project teams to ensure adjacencies and interstitial areas are addressed in an appropriate manner. From time to time, Design Director may be asked to assist with certain design activities with Attraction Projects.
Responsibilities
•Serves as principal designer responsible for concept initiation and design execution for all placemaking, area development and non-attraction projects.
•Upholds the creative vision and Universal standards at all USH/CW venues.
•Prepares and presents creative presentations of all project efforts to senior management at USH, CW and UPR.
•Manages Production Designers and creative staff through the development and delivery of all phases of the design process required to properly prepare creative materials and/or presentations.
•Develops and expresses the designs in a responsible & thorough manner so that information can be properly incorporated into construction documentation.
•Provides design direction for maintenance and refurbishing efforts to ensure the design intent is achieved.
•Provides direction and guidance on colors, materials, finishes and specifications for design & bid documentation, vendor submittal & in-field art direction.
•Reviews all drawings, documents and specifications for the projects to verify that the design intent has been properly incorporated.
•Works in close collaboration with the Director of Design Services in the coordination of creative and implementation teams and vendors.
•Provides input and advice on operational and implementation aspects of projects including budget, schedule, code requirements, selection of project resources and strategy for project execution.
•Reviews & coordinates regularly ongoing design development with Director of A&E to ensure that all facility interface issues are addressed.
•Works in conjunction with Director of Design Services to ensure creative and budget/schedule parameters are achieved.
•Proactively participates in team building and mentoring.
•Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established USH policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
•Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications/Requirements•Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university in: Architecture, Theatre, Film/Production, or related field.
•10 Years of Turn-key projects and relevant Design experience, specifically within the entertainment/theme park industry.
•Thorough knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup, CAD & Microsoft Office.
•Required knowledge of the process of design, development, contracting and construction.
•Required knowledge and working experience with thematic materials & finishes
