Senior Director - Merchandising - Dollar General - Nashville


Job description
Assist VP and/or SVP in developing and planning the selection and purchase of merchandise. Leads and assists buying teams in developing the business unit strategy and tactics to support overall department strategies and initiatives, including merchandise assortment, sales planning, advertisement/marketing, pricing and vendor relationships. Mentor, coach and assist in problem solving with their buying teams on item selection, financials, replenishment, negotiations,… to achieve sales and margin goals for the business. Facilitate the internal and external partnerships that allow Dollar General to serve others by being a customer driven distributor of consumable basics with Joint Business Planning with key Vendor Partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for Leadership of all aspects of driving sales, margin and turn within business units of responsibility.
Assist SVP and/or VP in the development and execution strategic buying and merchandising objectives to achieve Company sales and profit goals.
Manage the execution of Line Review Assortment Plans, product selection/sourcing, pricing, vendor negotiations and promotional marketing. Review business units’ merchandise for both core and non-core distribution and presentation in store.
Review reports with buying teams that analyze sales, margin and inventory and identify trends and recommend business opportunities to minimize risks.
Review inventory with Supply Chain Managers to best control procurement and logistical flow of merchandise until it reaches our customer.
Supervising, training and developing of buying teams to support development of team members.
Provide accurate and timely financial management information including reports that summarize business activity and financial position in areas of sales and customer buying trends.
Develop long-term, close vendor relationships that endorse and enhance the Company’s customer service focus, and support overall growth of the business. Ensure maintenance of consistent and productive vendor relationships.
Analyze competition and market share.
Collaborate across departments in taking project lead on initiatives for services and technology that link with company mission and business initiatives. Example: Alldata implementation.

Desired Skills and Experience
Knowledge and Skills:
Demonstrated results-oriented financial leadership and strategic sourcing experience negotiating advanced supply contracts.
Strong analytical and financial skills (e.g. ability to understand and impact a profit & loss statement) in the areas of financial controls and forecasting. Demonstrated planning and executing of annual budget to ensure positive shareholder risk.
Strong understanding of the dynamics of negotiating product and interpersonal knowledge of how to achieve Dollar General’s goals.
Ability to lead and manage change with a positive attitude.
Ability to effectively recruit, assess and develop personnel. Strong “hands-on” performance management abilities.
Demonstrated ability to be a team player and customer service driven, while maintaining the values of Dollar General.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff and management.
Strategic planning skills to identify opportunities and develop plans and methodologies to achieve those opportunities.
Knowledge of specific categories, including market trends, item cost, competitive issues and logistical issues to help facilitate customer satisfaction. Ability to manage across multiple category disciplines.
Ability to make decisions in a rapidly changing environment while maintaining an enthusiastic sense of mission.
Strong problem solving skills, utilizing technical expertise and good business judgment in support of operational and strategic objectives.

Work Experience and/or Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration or appropriate discipline preferred. 10+ years of merchandising experience required. Previous experience as a Senior Buyer and/or Manager in a sourcing role required with sales responsibilities of $500 Million or more.
