Vice President - Transportation - Alex & Red - New York


Job description
The Vice President of Transportation will be responsible for the timely and cost effective movement of inbound and outbound domestic and international shipments, between Baker & Taylor and Baker & Taylor Management Systems distribution centers, customers and vendors. The Vice President of Transportation will be responsible for an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million.

The Vice President, Transportation will report to the Senior Vice President of Operations and will manage three direct reports that include: a Manager of Domestic Transportation, an International Freight Coordinator and an Inbound Ocean Freight Coordinator.
He or she will:
Utilize the company’s Mercury Gate transportation management system to route approximately 50,000 packages per day in a cost effective manner that meets customer expectations.
Develop freight budget, monthly variance analysis and freight forecasts for both freight cost and recovery.
Regularly analyze volume and cost trends and suggest changes to the National and International Distribution Network.
Perform regular analysis comparing freight rates and discounts using actual data. Interpret data and report summarized findings that support plans and actions.
Control the audit of transportation invoices and protect the company from overcharges from any carrier, assure all discounts are properly applied and all rebates are received based on carrier agreement.
Select inbound and outbound carriers (Parcel, Less Than Truckload and Truck Load); negotiate tariffs and/or contracts that utilize Baker & Taylor’s leverage to obtain not only the best possible rate and service levels but also assure reduced or eliminated accessorial charges.
Assure that customer claims are reviewed, carrier claims submitted where appropriate and follow-up on carrier payment.
Monitor inbound and outbound carrier performance, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary.
Monitor all systems, including cost and recovery systems, which relate to transportation routing and charges.
Establish carriers for new customers and assure labeling and rates are charged as described in customer contract and consistent with the rules and regulations of the selected carriers.
Audit and monitor all customer freight rebates.
Control all Transportation department accounting, freight payment and accruals.
Review and revise Transportation department budgeting and expense tracking systems to assure that the company has accurate data to project and evaluate transportation expenses.
Keep abreast of all laws and carrier regulations to assure company compliance.
Communicate germane transportation issues to the service centers: rate and discount negotiations, industry trends, regulations, carriers, and equipment.
Provide guidance and direction to subordinates with a view toward their personal and professional development. Develop and maintain, through communication and delegation of authority, an atmosphere that encourages creativity and motivates personnel to assume greater responsibility.
Develop and maintain sound employee relations and participate in the implementation and administration of personnel policies and procedures.
Recruit, develop and train employees who have the required qualifications and competence.

Desired Skills and Experience
A minimum of ten years of multi-faceted transportation management experience.
Extensive domestic and international transportation experience including a solid understanding of laws and requirements. Knowledge of federal, state, and local freight and transport regulations, carrier negotiations and analysis, and financial analysis.
Experience in a split case shipping operation requiring quick order handling and delivery.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and advanced computer skills with an emphasis on database analysis and file manipulation.
Track record in motivating staff in an entrepreneurial environment to achieve aggressive goals.
Ability to not only define problems and issues, but present and implement solutions.
Ability to assess risk and return and negotiate creative solutions with financial and legal constraints.
Work well with team members within span of control but also across functional lines.
Bachelor’s degree in Management Science or related field is required.
