Job description
La Jolla Playhouse, a Tony Award-winning professional non-profit theatre located just north of San Diego in La Jolla, California, is seeking a proven fund development executive to become its next Director of Development and an an active member of the senior leadership team.
The Director of Development will lead, develop and implement a comprehensive resource development strategy to support the mission and programs of the La Jolla Playhouse. Reporting to Michael Rosenberg and working closely with the senior management team and the Board of Trustees, the Director of Development will leverage key relationships to ensure that the organization meets annual fundraising revenue goals.
The Director of Development will lead a full-time staff of nine as well as volunteers in efforts to capitalize on the tremendous opportunities of the organization’s multi-faceted programs; will ensure exceptional management of the fundraising and relationship building programs; and will function as a principal member of the leadership team working to continually strengthen the Playhouse as a local and national cultural leader and theatrical pace-setter.
In addition to its annual fund requirements, The Playhouse is currently planning a major endowment campaign, with the quiet phase slated to begin in the near future. The Director of Development will play a key role in coordination with the capital campaign to help ensure success for both its goals and the Playhouse’s annual development efforts during the campaigns implementation.
The Playhouse’s organizational budget is approximately $15 million, of which over $5 million is derived from individual gifts, organizational grants, sponsorships and other contributed income. Over the past year, the Playhouse has enjoyed the support of nearly 3,000 contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies. Virtually every donation supports its productions and Education and Outreach programs, ensuring that the Playhouse continues to present the unique, thought-provoking work for which it is known.
Desired Skills and Experience
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience), significant history of experience in fundraising at the senior management level, and evidence of a strong commitment to theater and the arts. Successful candidates will also possess strong leadership skills and have proven abilities in the following areas:
Proven track record of achieving revenue goals;
Proven management and leadership qualities, and ability to inspire and motivate staff and leadership volunteers;
Proven success in running a major annual fund and/or discrete major campaigns;
High energy, positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail;
A passion for building donor relationships at every level;
Ability to supervise staff and managers, and to draw the best from employees;
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to exhibit a thorough understanding of strategic development;
Strong verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively;
Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new accounts;
Strong partnership-building and event planning skills;
Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base;
Good computer skills and knowledge of fundraising database programs;
Depth of personal credibility in fund raising, and ability to exercise professional discretion and confidentiality;
Knowledge of the role and interrelationship of key theatre stakeholders;
Ability to relate effectively with a diverse range of people, including those in executive leadership positions;
Ability to challenge “status quo” thinking and assumptions;
Skill in fostering innovation, and ability to see new opportunities and position the theatre to exploit opportunities to increase contributed income;
Knowledge of the funding community and funding leaders;
Skill in demonstrating a deep commitment to those who provide support to the theatre.
