Job description
The Director, Future Growth Opportunities is responsible for identifying and executing new, early-stage efforts to demonstrate significant future merchandising opportunities that will drive material impact to the Walmart.com P&L and inform overall merchandising direction. With limited resources to start-up initiatives from scratch, this leader must partner with other teams and/or external parties to achieve credible results, which may include M&A activities. With a broad set of potential efforts, it is critical to be purposeful and data-driven while being customer-focused, on-strategy, and operationally savvy. The ultimate goals are future merchandising strategies to leapfrog competition and drive customer growth. This is an entrepreneurial, risk-taking merchandising role, not a generalist strategy role, requiring strategic judgment, business street-smarts, technical capabilities, analytical approaches, and operational know-how.
The successful candidate is an individual contributor who must be able to work independently, run analyses, structure ambiguous situations, and drive recommendations and results with clear transparency and communication. She or he must be a leader who can set direction with conviction and build collaborations on how to get it done while practicing company values and teamwork.
• Develops and drives innovative merchandising growth opportunities by researching and evaluating current customer, market, and industry trends; building data-driven insights that guide merchandising operations; identifying and testing new approaches that build sustainable competitive advantage; creating innovative solutions to explore future merchandising strategies; developing and executing pilot programs; estimating potential financial impact to the business; determining internal and external resources requirements (for example, external partners, mergers and acquisitions) to achieve plans; partnering with cross-functional senior leadership to gain alignment; collaborating with key stakeholders to support implementation plans; and presenting recommendations and strategic direction to senior leadership.
• Drives pilot programs to test and evaluate proposed merchandising by determining initiatives with the biggest impact to the company; defining key performance indicators (KPIs) to track program success; partnering with cross-functional partners to execute pilot programs; evaluating metrics throughout pilot execution to track progress and program success; and providing guidance to cross-functional leadership on execution goals.
• Develops and leads insight development to drive merchandising strategy recommendations by leading the analysis of industry and customer data; staying ahead of industry, market, and competitive trends; utilizing business expertise to prioritize projects based on customer and business impact; identifying strategic merchandising capability gaps to be addressed; and gaining alignment with cross-functional senior leadership on strategic recommendations.
Desired Skills and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, or related field and 6 years experience in merchandising, business consulting or related field, including 2 years experience with data analytics or insights, OR 8 years experience in merchandising, business consulting or related field, including 2 years experience with data analytics or insights.
• Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA).
• 4 years experience in merchandise buying.
• 4 years experience in strategy consulting.
• 4 years experience with mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
• 4 years experience managing cross-functional teams.
• 2 years experience in technical web application development.
• 2 years experience working with start-up and new ventures opportunities.
