Director Research & Development Pacific Foods Tualatin

Lead the research and development of new products and ingredients to existing products. Provide technical leadership and direct development for product strategy and execution with a focus on new product development initiatives and new strategic platforms related to achieving profitable growth. Represents the Research and Development function as a member of the Leadership Team setting strategic direction for company growth.
Essential Functions:
Direct the development of new product formulas and coordination of new product activities with other functional departments within the company
Responsible for determining processes and procedures in collaboration with manufacturing and/or marketing to achieve successful commercialization of bench top formulas
Provide direction, leadership and guidance to ensure relentless focus on delivering innovative, unique new product offerings
Collaborate internally and externally to create clear roadmaps to meet growth expectations and technical requirements. Create strong partnerships with other business units to understand & translate the requirements to create leading products. Translate market studies and research in collaboration with consumer insights, marketing and category management to deeply understand the requirements to create leading products for target markets, product programs, and strategic product mix
Oversee the coordination and communication of technical product information to other departments
Direct the completion of information regarding new products and formula changes for costing purposes
Oversee the supervision of the Research and Development department to include hiring and compensation decisions, objective setting, talent and performance management
Ensure that nutritional analysis information and nutritional labeling is conducted according to specifications and best practices.
Develop and manage the Research and Development budget. Diagnose ingredient and product-related problems with products and processes and recommend solutions
Participate as an active member of the company’s Leadership Team in setting strategic direction for company growth in the area of Research and Development in a way that helps the company achieve its strategic goals.
Ensure food safety and quality protocols are specified and followed for all new products

Oversee the testing of competitive products
Assist with consumer and customer information
Organize working environment to accommodate development activities
As an employee of a food manufacturing facility you are responsible for ensuring food safety and quality by reporting any concerns to the quality assurance department.
Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory responsibilities:
Direct all activities and the staff of the Research and Development department. Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include budgeting, interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

In-depth technical knowledge in the composition and functionality of food systems
Ability to develop long-term plans, strategies, initiatives and programs
Proven ability managing the creative process in others, has good judgment regarding which ideas will be viable, and has successfully brought creative ideas to market
Demonstrated ability to form seamless business partnerships and influence outcomes with cross functional leaders
Demonstrated ability to manage through ambiguity, take calculated risks based on sound technical options, and offer innovative solutions to increase the value and magnitude of the business opportunity
Excellent computer skills, with an advanced understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Genesis, and the ability to quickly learn new systems
Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize competing demands
Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and mentoring skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels in the departments and company
Requires frequent use of discretion, decision-making, creativity, problem solving, basic and advanced math and exercise of independent judgement
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
Physical activities require standing, walking, bending, and some lifting
Physical ability to taste test all products

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree or equivalent specializing in Food Science, Nutrition or related field. 10-15 years of relevant experience in product development of food/beverage products. 10 years of progressive management experience.
