The VICE legal team seeks to employ an attorney to work on the VICE on HBO nightly news show and VICE News. The ideal candidate will have experience with news broadcasting and/or investigative journalism and be comfortable working in a fast paced and exciting environment.

• Advise and work with producers on best practices in the field, risk avoidance, reporters privileges, first amendment protections, defamation, rights of privacy and publicity, media access to information and news events, reporters’ and authors’ rights, news-gathering torts, injunctions, gag orders, and prior restraints
• Organize, draft and maintain production related forms and templates (e.g. licenses agreements, performer releases, location releases, vendor agreements, etc.)
• Draft and negotiate licensing agreements
• Perform legal review of audiovisual content, promotional material and commercial content to identify any legal issues (e.g. fair use analysis, copyright/trademark infringement, privacy, publicity, defamation)
• Work with post production and archival teams to pre-clear content for nightly news segments
• Review, draft and negotiate various agreements related to broadcast and distribution of content (e.g. technology service agreements, vendor agreements, etc.)
EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION:
•JD required
• At least 3 years of legal experience working at a media company, news organization or law firm handling production related agreements. News broadcasting or investigative reporting experience is plus.
• Well-versed in intellectual property law and first amendment rights (particularly copyright and fair use), risk management issues, rights of publicity/privacy issues and reporters privileges.
• Ideal candidate is a self starter with sound business judgment, and flexibility/adaptability to manage multiple time-sensitive matters, including appropriately prioritizing among them
• Demonstrated ability, in a positive and practical manner, to identify and resolve issues efficiently and effectively
• Excellent interpersonal skills, willingness to work on a broad variety of matters and issues including matters outside area of expertise
