Director Neuromuscular Disease Research Pfizer Cambridge

The Neuromuscular Disease Research (NM) group is part of Pfizer’s Rare Disease Research Unit (RDRU) and focuses on developing new therapies for rare neuromuscular disorders, such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Friedreich’s Ataxia and ALS. The RDRU is part of Pfizer's BioTherapeutics Division, one of the two major divisions in Pfizer Worldwide R&D responsible for advancing a large portfolio of programs towards clinical proof-of-concept. The NM group is looking for a highly motivated and qualified skeletal muscle physiologist to lead projects and teams within the multi-disciplinary NM group.
Responsibilities

Management Responsibilities:
• Manage a group of up to 5 lab-based scientists with in vitro and in vivo skills sets.
• Manage at least 2 portfolio projects which include target validation and lead optimization to early clinical development.
• Interface with other units within the BioTherapeutics division to support project needs.
• Evaluate and engage strategic external alliances.
Technical Responsibilities:
• Hands on experience with existing in vitro and in vivo assays and models enabling the prosecution of novel targets and repurposing of existing drug candidates for rare NM diseases.
• Drive innovative approaches to model rare NM diseases for drug candidate selection.
• Support medicinal chemists and protein engineers in hit-to-lead and lead optimization efforts.

Qualifications

• Excellent working knowledge of skeletal muscle physiology in health and disease, including an in-depth understanding of the in vitro and in vivo models used in skeletal muscle research.
• PhD in the life sciences with >7 years of post-doctoral experience; some industry experience preferred.
• Evidence of scientific accomplishments in skeletal muscle physiology – high impact publications and meeting presentations.
• Track record of working with academia and/or biotechnology companies to enhance innovation.
• Evidence of mentorship and supervisory experience required.
