Job Description:
Our NYC-based design director role is one of the most interesting and unique in the industry, with a broad mandate to push the design envelope. The director must be a highly creative and effective professional with broad residential, retail, restaurant and hospitality design experience and a demonstrated ability to create and execute innovative concepts and user experiences. This leader must have a passion for all things design and have a proven track record developing top-shelf design talent and building world-class multi-disciplinary teams.

The director must be able to effectively collaborate with peers in the America’s and Global design organizations, real estate, construction, operations and other key departments to execute to the highest standards.

We are looking for a talented designer and charismatic design leader with experience building and leading high caliber creative teams. This leader must be able to effectively balance business considerations with creative and functional goals, meet aggressive timelines and continuously push the teams to raise the bar on talent and quality design execution.



Responsibilities

The expectations and responsibilities for the design director role include but are not limited to the following:



Elevates Design
Builds a strong creative studio culture that encourages open discourse, collaboration and critical thinking. Has a passion for all things design that includes an understanding of history and current trends in design, furniture and fashion.
Able to leverage on-the-boards experience to provide focused creative direction and feedback that consistently drives and elevates design. Effectively addresses gaps and troubleshoots when needed.
Leads teams to develop thoughtful and highly creative regional design strategies and localized store designs that align with Global Design Strategy and uphold Starbucks high quality brand standards
Able to effectively lead design studios to implement company programs in a highly fluid and fast-moving business environment.
Promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and collaboration with a focus on elevating design while achieving business results.


Elevates Talent
Continuously sets a high bar for design talent, clearly articulates expectations to teams and provides effective and timely direction and feedback on performance and project work.
Identifies and clearly communicates key responsibilities, best practices and expectations to ensure the success of the immediate team of direct reports.
Challenges and inspires teams and provides timely coaching, feedback, leadership support and developmental opportunities in order to achieve design and business results. Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
Constantly builds bench and pipeline of diverse, high caliber talent (both internally and externally).


Manages The Work - Oversees The Work Efforts And Deliverables Of Regional Studios
Directs the regional design teams and external architect consultants and leads the design process for the region in close collaboration with a cross-functional operations, real estate and construction teams.
Ensures the design studios:
Develop effective store layouts that meet functional and business needs.
Collaborate with broader store development team to meet internal project timelines, annual new store and renovation project counts and sales weeks goals.Negotiate contracts and manage work efforts of the external architect consultants to ensure they deliver high quality construction documents that comply with architectural and quality standards, building codes and health and safety regulations, on time and on budget.
Develops annual operating plan, budget, and quarterly forecast updates. Monitors and reports on studio design performance, progress towards annual goals, and variances in store costs and store count forecasts relative to strategic plans for the business unit.


Summary Of Experience
Leadership/Ownership of design firm preferred, 5+ years.
Demonstrated design leadership of multi-disciplinary teams (10+ people) in an architecture or design office environment, 8+ years.
Hiring and managing outside consultants, 8 + years
Building, leading and mentoring cross-functional teams, 5+ years.
Design of high-end single family residential, retail, restaurant and hospitality environments preferred, 5+ years.
General business experience in a large, matrixed organization, 3-5+ years.
Management of complex and/or large-scale concept design projects, 3-5+ years.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to foster teamwork among diverse groups and disciplines.
Ability to plan and manage schedules for multiple tasks.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Ability to elevate design in a fluid and fast-moving business environment.
