Job Description:
The Director, Project Delivery is a senior member of IT. Responsibilities include leading business application strategy, custom software development, and the ongoing support and enhancement of third-party software. This position requires considerable use of initiative and independent judgment in managing diverse application development initiatives with business stakeholders.
The Director, Project Delivery manages a team of full-time staff, as well as supplemental consulting staff as necessary. This position reports to the Senior Director, Solution Design and Delivery and is based in Washington, DC.
Lead IT project delivery for the organization, including managing the strategic aspects of each engagement and mitigating any potential risk.
Develop and enforce project and portfolio management and delivery methodologies, including standardization of process, artifacts/templates and ongoing quality control. Provide supervision, direction and feedback to the delivery team on the quality of their project implementation(s) and technical problem solving.
Partner with IT leadership to align project delivery and resources with Pew’s strategic and tactical direction, including recommendations on how best to address institutional priorities. Direct project delivery staff and consultants in accordance with these priorities.
Work with stakeholders to define critical projects, including setting definitive goals, timelines and budgets. Develop project scope, determine necessary resources and define timeline and budget; provide ongoing monitoring of projects across these same dimensions.
Provide direct supervision of senior staff and indirect management of their staffs. Coaches and mentors development, supplies opportunities to improve skills and technical knowledge, and provides regular feedback about progress.
Manage third-party vendor work product and relationships, including developing and negotiating contract scope, terms and pricing as necessary.
Communicate status of activities and projects to IT leadership, senior management, and organization-wide stakeholders.
Maintain and continue to develop a broad knowledge of project delivery best practices and relevant industry standards. Stay informed of industry trends in order to inform leadership and recommend relevant and appropriate new project delivery methodologies and related technology. Participate in conferences, seminars and other professional development activities to keep current in the field.

Bachelor's degree required, advance degree preferred.
At least ten years of experience in large-scale project management.
Eight or more years of experience managing technology delivery.
Eight or more years of direct supervisory experience preferred with a minimum of two years, including performance management and professional development mentoring for direct reports.
Experience overseeing delivery and enhancement of enterprise business systems and content management systems.
Deep expertise in project delivery methodologies and the software development lifecycle, including experience managing both waterfall and agile projects.
Demonstrated capacity to identify and solve problems and to mentor the development of these skills in others.
Able to manage multiple priorities across the unit and to organize and coordinate efforts of subordinate staff, including assessing needs and allocating resources across multiple projects.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate complex technical challenges and strategy in non-technical language to senior management and business users.
Ability to draft and deliver high-level communications, including executive summaries of large, complicated technical projects and their related risks, rewards and costs. Able to supervise staff writing user and system documentation for software applications.
Ability to lead and motivate groups to meet business goals; and ability to navigate complex organizational relationships and build consensus around project outcomes and objectives.
Robust client-facing skills, customer service orientation and high level of enthusiasm. Ability to engender and sustain a culture of strong customer service across application development staff, including the fostering of strong relationships.
Ability to articulate complex technical problems in layman’s language to a non-technical audience.
Experience working with vendors and third-party consultants, including responsibility for oversight of related deliverables.
Preferred
Experience in a nonprofit or advocacy-driven organization.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
