Job Description
To manage and coordinate a team of US SHE auditors as they carry out process safety, asset management, occupational safety, environment and sustainability risk based audits across the various businesses and operations of National Grid. This role supports the organisation in achieving its objectives through the provision of independent and objective assurance and the promotion of best practice in SHE risk management and control processes. In addition to motivating and directing a high performance SHE Audit Team that delivers an effective and proactive audit service, the Director of US SHE Audit supports the Head of Global SHE Audit and Head of Corporate Audit in communication of findings, conclusions and progress to business stakeholders, the Executive and the SHE Committee.
Position Responsibilities (including But Not Limited To)
Business Knowledge
Knowledge of process safety and asset management, occupational safety and health and environmental risks and regulations.
Understand National Grid’s businesses and procedures by reviewing annual business plans, performance and KPI reports.
Develop and utilize peer group network in order to absorb and apply wider audit developments and professional leading practice within the audit area.
Keep up to date with regulatory and wider audit developments in order to assess the optimization of best practice for National Grid.
Work on ad-hoc projects to support development of the audit function and the business as may be required.
Audit Execution and Reporting
Active participation in the coordination and development of an ongoing, independent and risk based, global SHE audit plan including undertaking meetings with key stakeholders, compiling proposed audit topics, assurance activities, and align with internal and external business, process safety, occupational safety, environment and sustainability risks.
Work with Head of Global SHE Audit and key co-sourcing partners to identify right resources and develop a solid working relationship.
Supervise and support audit team during the audit process to validate focus is placed on key risk items, audit findings are value adding and lead to process and control improvements.
Work with team to understand audit findings and identify key themes and trends that could lead to future control environment weaknesses.
Review and ensure auditors properly document and support audit findings and all audit work is saved on audit software (Pentana Audit Work System).
Review audit reports to ensure they are accurate, clear and concise requiring minimal changes from Head of Global SHE Audit.
Stakeholder Management and Communication
Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in order to capture and share common industry best practices which may impact the control environment, understand and challenge business processes.
Clearly and concisely communicate findings, conclusions and progress on recommendations and remedial actions to business stakeholders, audit team, and Head of Global SHE Audit.
Actively support Head of Global SHE Audit and Director of Corporate Audit in preparation of papers/presentations for SHE Committee meetings, Executive meetings and key stakeholder meetings, as required.
Help to educate the business on the role of internal audit, the importance of controls and promote the audit function as a great critical experience/development role.
People Development
Manage and develop a high performance SHE audit team that delivers an effective and proactive audit service by providing constructive feedback and setting challenging objectives that include self-development.
Ensure key competencies are maintained and succession planning is in place.
Provide technical guidance, support and coaching to team in order to share audit knowledge, experience and develop controls and technical understanding within discipline.
Knowledge & Experience Required
A Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (or equivalent) and a relevant process safety, safety, health or environmental professional qualification.
Member of /affiliation to or professional bodies is desirable in relation to engineering, safety, health and environment and or audit.
15 years of technical/operational experience or equivalent.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of SHE and Process safety legislation, policy, management systems, SHE risks and demonstrated ability to command respect in this subject across the business.
Excellent knowledge and understanding of audit legislation, internal control frameworks, audit systems and risks..
Extensive audit knowledge with the ability to apply and modify complex audit processes appropriately.
Demonstrated track record of managing others, developing teams and managing multiple projects.
Full driving licence required.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, and Word), data analytics and auditing software is desirable.
Travel 20% - 30% within the US, occasionally to UK
