Director Engineering Loyalty Experiences Web Engineering American Express Phoenix

Job Description:
Web Engineering team is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our Phoenix based Loyalty development teams. The Director will be responsible for the definition, development, and delivery of the customer platforms that provide various services related to the Loyalty portfolio, including International Membership Rewards, Premium Products, and the Online Enrollment Tool. The Web Engineering team works closely with the Marketing and World Service organizations to deliver the needs associated with our key loyalty journeys that drive customer engagement and satisfaction.
The Web Engineering organization is primarily based out of Phoenix but has expanded to include new team members based out of New York. The leader will play a critical role in attracting and hiring team members that are fluent with new digital development frameworks such as Angular, Node, and React, while delivering against key business objectives. This leader is expected to be a "hands-on" change leader in the migration off of our legacy platforms and into the new framework design patterns. The leader will work closely with local product owners and user experience design teams to transform the technology solutions to leading edge technologies.

The position requires the ability to travel (5-10% - or approximately 4 times/year as needed to support project initiatives and strategic planning. The Loyalty teams follow Agile development methodologies and are primarily hosted on internal distributed systems that interact with a variety of services. There is a broad mixture of technologies and external partnerships integrated to create a high speed, engaging user experiences that are a cornerstone of our digital experiences.

Responsibilities
Develop and delivers against the Loyalty roadmap including but not limited to user experience creation using javascript frameworks (Angular, Node, Mongo, React) and java based solutions (Websphere, Rest Data Services.)
Lead a team of up to 20 staff members in the US and abroad
Lead platform integration projects in partnership with internal and external clients
Partner with technology, vendors, and other key groups to deliver new and enhanced assets
Drive innovation and change by identifying new opportunities based on industry best practices, as well as internal and external client needs
Owns and develops Enterprise strategies that focus on market and operational drivers to further improve, consolidate and enhance the technical solutions
Works with the performance and support teams, AXP Operations, IBM, EMC, and others to deliver world class solutions.
Provides direction to application development teams to ensure projects align with technical strategy
Lead efforts to implement new technology, upgrades, and enhancements
Lead efforts to improve availability and performance
Technical leadership to resolve incidents and complete root cause analysis
Directs new vendor selections, POCs, and detailed assessments for new partnerships
Drives innovation and thought leadership within the organization.

Qualifications
5+ years of experience leading and developing enterprise level customer facing solutions using a variety of technology but with focus on HTML5, CSS, JQuery, Javascript and client side user experiences. 1-2 years experience with newer frameworks such as Angular/Node/React or deep API experience
3+ years of experience in global architectures, computing knowledge, computing principles, and IT best practices
5+ years experience in java and database solutions development, including hands-on experience with DB2, Oracle, or similar technologies
Experience leading at least 10 direct reports strongly preferred
Strong technical knowledge of enterprise data stores with millions of records containing structured and unstructured data.
Demonstrated experience in managing large scale technology development projects using Agile
Superb relationship building skills and proven ability to influence and drive delivery across a geographical distributed organization
Superb collaboration and influencing skills and strong communication skills
Strong business facing, communication and relationship building skills.
Broad based technical background, with specific technical depth in at least one distributed platform.
5+ Years experience in Services Oriented Architecture and the composition of high performance services and applications also a plus
