Job Description:
The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) at Stanford University is seeking qualified candidates for the Director of the Stanford Program in Oxford, United Kingdom. This is a full-time, regular, administrative position.
The Director of the Stanford Program in Oxford is charged with nourishing an intellectual and social environment that is supportive of excellence and high academic standards for Stanford undergraduates.
The Director is responsible for the academic and administrative management and day to day operation of the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) center and residence and for making decisions on local resource allocations and priorities, recognizing both local practice and Stanford University operating principles.
The Stanford Program in Oxford is a three quarter academic program supporting an average of 140 students per year. This position supervises 3 administrative staff employees and manages the employment of lecturers and tutors associated with the program. The Director has immediate responsibilities for Stanford undergraduates attending and living at the center each quarter and for providing direction, leadership, advising and support for their needs, in close collaboration with BOSP home campus staff in California.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement a curriculum within the context of Stanford University's academic organization and standards, in coordination with home campus senior staff and faculty.
Identify, hire, evaluate, and coordinate local faculty to lecture and teach seminar courses, tutorials or independent study at an appropriate academic level, bearing in mind cultural and pedagogical differences. Evaluate teaching performance and effectiveness on a regular basis.
Ensure that operations of the Center and the academic programs are in compliance with all policies, regulations and laws governing Stanford University, and in the country of program operation (United Kingdom). Manage Center staff, including hiring, training and performance evaluation, as well as all fiscal activities, including preparation of the annual budget.
Provide a residential environment conducive to community learning, cultural awareness, and behavioral and safety standards consistent with Stanford campus norms
Manage relations with partner universities, local public safety, US consular, local country immigration officials, and other local governmental agencies and organizations to facilitate the operations of the program.
Advise students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, personal matters, accessibility, housing, local environment, etc., to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
Provide strategic oversight for program activities, meetings, and events, including those with external partners. Manage the resolution of program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
Education and Experience
Earned Doctorate or equivalent experience with professional advanced degree
3+ years of university level teaching experience
Demonstrated professional administrative experience in higher education in a managerial role
Professional experience with American undergraduates at an institution similar to Stanford, preferred, but not required
Experience with overseas study programs preferred, but not required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
Advanced knowledge of U.K. culture, history and business etiquette
General knowledge of U.K. academic communities
Understanding and familiarity with academic program planning
Ability to provide academic and managerial leadership of the program and office
Must be able to work variable hours, evenings or weekends
Must be able to travel locally and/or internationally with occasional overnight travel
