Director - Project, IT - CFA Institute - Charlottesville


Job description
The Project Director is responsible for planning, leading, organizing and motivating multiple teams to achieve a high level of performance and quality in delivering work items that provide exceptional business value. The Project Director may be responsible for assisting with the management of large or complex projects. The Project Director will be expected to use knowledge and experience in blending traditional project management principles and practices with an Agile development approach to appropriately fit the complexity, size and environment of the work. The Project Director has budget and reporting responsibilities for a portfolio of work. The Project Director may act as the Release Train Engineer (RTE) for an Agile Release Train. In addition, The Project Director may be responsible for managing project managers.



The position will be headquartered in Charlottesville, VA, and will be supported by the Head of IT Solutions Delivery.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Effectively manage a team of project managers

• Manage the planning and execution of a portfolio of work including compiling and tracking the portfolio objectives and creating portfolio reporting and completion tracking.

• Track costs and report on the portfolio budgets

• Support the business sponsor in managing expectations for project deliverables, managing stakeholder communications, and helping to implement an effective system of project governance

• Follow and maintain a well-defined project management process and champion ongoing process improvement initiatives to implement best practices.

• Promote team empowerment; facilitate team member engagement, encourage a sustainable pace with excellent quality.

• Develop strong vendor partnerships; ensure delivery of services outlined in statements of work and tracking costs within budget guidelines.

• Manage project risk, anticipating issues and escalating problems early and often.

Desired Skills and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field; MA or MS is a plus.

• Minimum 8-10 years of experience in project management with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to confront challenges in creative ways.

• Solid understanding of software development life cycle models as well as expert knowledge of both Agile and traditional project management principles and practices and the ability to blend them together in the right proportions to fit a project and business environment. Knowledge of Scrum, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and Kanban a plus.

• A proven track record of successfully implementing software or web development projects using Agile and/or traditional methodologies including experience managing large, complex projects in a high tech environment with multi-function teams.

• Possess sufficient level of technical background to provide highly credible leadership to development teams and to be able to accurately and objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues.

• Ability to provide leadership to business analysts and collaborate with customers and develop strategies and solutions of high business value.

• Strong team orientation with the ability to provide leadership and work cross functionally.

• Excellent interpersonal skills including a professional and diplomatic demeanor, facilitation and communication skills with the ability to manage expectations and relate effectively at all levels of the organization.

• Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and presentation.

• Ability to create new and unique ideas and an entrepreneurial spirit a plus.

• Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of tools including Word, Project, Visio, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook

• Previous experience using Team Foundation Server and/or SharePoint as a collaboration tool a plus.

• Strong interest in current and emerging web and mobile technologies demonstrated through training, job experience and/or industry activities.

• Very high level of organizational and time management skills.

• Flexibility in competently juggling competing priorities and changing expectations.

• Must demonstrate outstanding judgment and mature business skills with the ability to establish a strong rapport with senior management.

• Excellent consulting, problem solving, and analytical skills.

• Willingness to ask questions rather than just follow directions is required.

• Project Management Professional (PMP) or (PMI-ACP), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), SAFe Agilist (SA) and/or similar certification is a plus.
