Director - Social Media Strategy - Crain Communications - Detroit


Job description
Our team of experts and innovators not only push Crain and our Brands forward, they are thought leaders in the industries we serve. As Social Media Strategy Director you will provide strategic leadership to Crain and our award winning Brand-level efforts to engage customers via social media.

Crain’s editorial and creative teams are consistently recognized among the world’s best. We host hundreds of professional events each year. You will work with iconic Brands to help them utilize social media across all their initiatives, both editorial and business-side.



The Director will also be the key visionary and driver behind the Crain’s effort to build a world-class social media publishing platform. The position will be based in our Eastern Market area Detroit office with travel to our office in midtown Manhattan and our Chicago office overlooking Millennium Park. You will report to the Director of Digital Strategy.

The role:

• Work with Crain Corporate & Brand Leadership, establish a flexible social media strategic plan that can be customized and executed at the Brand level and encompasses both external social media presence and the use of social media to drive engagement on our digital properties.
• Work with Publishers, Editors, Digital GMs, Audience Development Directors, Marketing Directors and Event Directors, as well as Corporate and Brand technology teams, to develop tactical social media initiatives that have application across all departments within the Brands.
• Establish Company-wide and Brand-level baseline social media performance metrics.
• Establish consistent set of strategic, tactical and operational KPIs to measure social media performance at a Company-wide and Brand-level.
• Establish scorecard system to effectively identify high/low performing social media properties at Crain, monitor industry leaders/peers and facilitate the sharing of Best Practices among the Brands.
• Identify new vendors and technologies that will improve the Company’s social media performance; convey those benefits; achieve Brand buy-in; negotiate favorable deals with vendors; implement technologies; and monitor performance against pre-established KPIs.
• Drive continuous social media improvement across all Brands by utilizing a data-driven approach to social media deployment and evaluation.

The ideal candidate has:

• 5 to 7 years of demonstrated expertise in social media strategy and execution.
• Experience leading social media teams.
• A deep understanding of social & digital marketing, analytics, technology and strategy.
• A strong understanding of the Crain organization and the strength, uniqueness, and power of each Brand.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• A collaborative, consensus-building approach and the ability to work in unstructured environments without direct authority over Brands or, in some cases, implementation teams.
