Director - Prospect Research - Bentley University - Boston

Job description
The Director of Prospect Research will support the university's fund raising program by leading the prospect research, prospect management, and moves management systems for the division of university advancement. The Director of Prospect Research reports to the Executive Director of Development.

The Director will:

Prepare high-level research on individuals using a wide variety of biographical, organizational and financial sources, including state-of-the-art online database services, Internet websites, library and government sources and other external sources of public information.

Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity and connections to the university. Evaluate research results to develop and implement further research strategies to assist gift officers with the development of cultivation and solicitation plans.


Coordinate research to ensure current biographical information is routed to University staff attending events.

Serve as the primary manager of Bentley's prospect rating system and database entries to ensure that they are current and properly coded.

Prepare a monthly activity summary report containing new activity entries in the database and prospect/contact reports.

Plan and organize regular meetings with the Executive Director of Development and with development officers to assign prospects, monitor timely movement through the pipeline, and develop and enhance strategy to convert prospects to donors.

Develop a collaborative partnership with managing directors of fund raising units and individual development staff to ensure that the development staff is working with the most financially capable donors.
Plan and facilitate prospect review meetings, support development officer portfolio review, coordinate with the fund raising managing directors to assign prospects, update prospect ratings, and review and improve internal prospect tracking procedures.

Create and maintain policies and procedures supporting best practices, ethical and professional research standards, leveraging technology, data integrity and data security.

Desired Skills and Experience
Bachelor's degree plus five to seven years of prospect research experience and a firm command of the skills set of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement's (APRA).

Must have strong technical skills, excellent writing ability and comfort in the use of technology in support of the prospect research program.

Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact positively with colleagues throughout the UA division in support of their work.

Ability to work in a collaborative fashion with managing directors and individual fund raising staff.

Must be a leader with the ability to effectively facilitate prospect review meetings.

Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted US driver's license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley's insurance carrier.
