Director - Product Management - Bunchball - San Francisco
Job description
The engineering organization lives and breathes our motto - "More Product. More Accurately. More Often." We release often across three agile scrum teams, and demand quality work to support the hundreds of enterprise customers relying on our platform. To support this, we are looking for a Director of Product Management who is responsible for the purpose and the content of what the engineering team delivers. Organized within a matrix structure, the Director of Product Management must work with discipline managers and the agile team lead to drive the delivery targets, features and acceptance criteria that defines success. This person is also the primary point of collaborative contact for all internal-customer, partner and dependency teams. They must enjoy collaborating and finding mutually advantageous outcomes to complex multi-dimensional cross-team challenges. This person is required to walk the line between pure business requirements definition and the fine details of technical implementations and trade-offs. This must all be done while communicating plans and purpose to the team and stakeholders from a variety of different disciplines and skill types.
What you get to do everyday:
- Lead one or more feature or systems teams as its technical product owner.
- Define priorities, requirements, and acceptance criteria.
- Drive the strategic roadmap and direction for area of ownership.
- Function as the internal liaison and evangelist for area of ownership, required to interface with internal customers and dependencies to drive organizational consensus.
- Indirectly leads and influences the team's engineering, quality engineering, site reliability, operations engineering, and agile methodology team members.
- Ultimately accountable for the success or failure of what the feature team ships; is the "face of the product".
Desired Skills and Experience
What you bring to the role:
- Ability to distill requirements on technical topics into written goals and stories without becoming bogged down in the implementation details.
- Ability to be an active participant in architecture and design reviews, able to understand the technical implementation trade-offs to ensure that requirements are not misunderstood or being ignored by a given implementation plan.
- Excellent written and verbal skills focused on the ability to communicate goals and strategies to a broad technical audience and to distill down complex technical trade-off decisions into concise plain language explanations.
- Ability to quickly visualize complex implementation plans with multiple stakeholders and dependencies to determine critical paths.
- Proficiency at brokering mutually beneficial plans intra-team or across groups within a large organization.
- Ability to balance immediate tactical pressures with a broader strategic vision and direction.
- A deep and nuanced understanding of high availability online service businesses and the operational pressures they incur.
- A history and comfort of operating in agile methodology environments.
- Experience working on Internet-scale online services and/or highly distributed systems.
- A background in online services development and/or systems architecture.
- Prior experience leading technical teams directly and indirectly.
- A comfort with the software and hardware used to run a large scale horizontally scaled service offering.
- Bachelor's Degree in related technical field.
- 5+ years experience.
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Experience with "cloud" service providers and the technologies therein (both IaaS and PaaS vendors).
- A strong understanding of the principles of continuous delivery.
