Creative Director – Digital Marketing - Staples - Framingham


Job description
Position Summary:
We are looking for a Creative Director to take our digital marketing creative team capabilities to the next level. As senior member of the Agency at Staples you will have the responsibility to apply your extraordinary talent in directing a team of online visual designers in creative problem solving and design execution. In addition to being an exceptional designer, you are able to mentor and lead other designers. Your ability to partner and maintain strong relationships with other creative leaders and business partners will to ensure collaborative and integrated solutions will be valued.

Your team will have the complete digital marketing thumbprint for our customer experience. We don’t do banners, we don’t do landing pages, we don’t do emails. We tell stories that integrate across our entire customer journey. You will be involved in the strategy, insight, design, execution and analytics of our marketing program. This is not a position for the shy or faint of heart. Your diplomacy skills will be called on regularly as you balance the brand story with what is possibly technically. It’s not perfect. It’s complicated. It’s pioneering. It’s frustrating. But it can be exhilarating.


You will be directly responsible for developing best-in-class email, display, video marketing programs across all Staples business functions, including our omni-Retail, Online and Contract teams. Through your leadership you will align creative execution with business strategy, user experience and technology. Your ability to execute compelling designs and understand business objectives, while maintaining an eye on the brand presentation & customer experience across all digital marketing touchpoints will be essential. You must be a confident and passionate leader who is able to design and drive conceptual thinking, while managing multiple projects simultaneously.

We are not looking for a campaign-level CD that rides in to pitch an amazingly integrated campaign but has never been in the work. We want a bigger person, the whole package. In one day, you’ll develop a campaign that is on brand, on message, on target AND work with the development team to push the edge of responsible/scalable/touch-first design AND get in the weeds on story telling through product promotions AND motivate a team to go to the edge of a design AND do it all over again (all while running from meeting to meeting.)

Primary Responsibilities:
Direct creative strategy and execution for email, display banners and rich-media animation
Drive digital marketing customer journey through breakthrough creative and unique storytelling
Enhance Staples brand through evolution of customer experience and visual design standards
Create engaging & responsive, customer focused designs for all screen size touchoints
Provide design support, and drive creative ideation and new ideas
Partner with the Account team and cross-functional creative team leaders
Actively build partnerships with business team members
Stay abreast of evolving industry and emerging trends & technologies
Develop team leadership skills through mentoring and training
Prioritize and delegate workload for your team, and help out when needed
Mentor team of designers - manage their performance and career development
Own small, medium and large projects
Book reports. Yep, we read lots of books. Not about email, but about leadership and disruption

Desired Skills and Experience
Basic:

Bachelor’s degree; Interaction Design or related disciplines a must.
10+ years of experience in area of digital, mobile experience and/or web-based interaction & visual design, user-experience design, or user-interface design.
5+ years supporting retail sector while leading high performing digital-based visual design teams.

Preferred:
Extensive experience focused on creating compelling, sales driving customer experiences across email, banner display and promotional web pages
Proven experience with iterative design and development processes
Experience leading and directing internal associates, contractors and outside vendors
Deep understanding of human behavior within retail and social environments
Extensive experience of current design standards for windows, iOS, Android and the Web
Ability to create solutions from initial concept through final completion
Understanding of current UI standards for the web & mobile, including responsive web design
Strong technical skills, with understanding of front-end development tools & techniques – HTML, Media Queries, CSS, and Javascript is a huge must
Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, with ability to execute high-level creative designs
Must be highly organized, and posses excellent time-management & communication skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities
Strong creative portfolio demonstrating examples applicable to digital marketing properties, specifically email, display & rich-media animation
Strong presentation skills and ability to influence others
Above all, must have a great sense of humor as well as a sense of urgency
