Director - Annual Giving - The Jackson Laboratory - Hartford
Job description
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, in Farmington, CT is seeking a Director of Annual Campaigns responsible for the management of all annual giving activity related to the Jackson Laboratory. This includes overseeing the day-to-day activity of one professional annual gifts officer, and management of the Lab’s direct response programs. The Director is also responsible for soliciting leadership-level annual giving donors, managing volunteer groups who support the annual giving, including the National Council Executive Committee, and creatively working to identify new major gift prospects for the Laboratory.
The Director will have primary responsibility for planning and ensuring the timely execution of direct response appeals. The ideal candidate will possess excellent working knowledge of direct mail, telemarketing, and social media fundraising best practices; including appeal writing, creative design, appeal testing, script development, results tracking and evaluating tools, and annual giving stewardship practices.
The Director of Annual Campaigns, reporting to the Senior Director of Development will also manage a portfolio of annual giving donors capable of making annual gifts of $10,000 or more.
Responsibilities
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Laboratory’s annual and long-term goals, programs and initiatives.
Determine the overall strategic direction, budget, and goals for the annual giving program based on resources, needs and priorities of the Jackson Laboratory. Manage and execute the approved plan and related activities.
Manage and help guide the daily activity of one annual giving gifts officer.
Work closely with the Senior Director of Development, Senior Director of Operations, and Director of Communications in crafting messaging for the annual campaigns program.
Develop all print and electronic marketing materials for annual giving priorities.
On a regular basis, analyze the results of all direct response appeals and adjust strategy accordingly. Provide monthly reports and ongoing analysis of the direct mail, social media, and telemarketing program for senior management.
Manage all annual giving stewardship activities, including written communications, telephone contact and special events. Provide strategic direction and management for annual recognition societies and support for the annual donor honor roll.
Provide day-to-day management, guidance and support for annual fund volunteers, including the National Council Executive Committee.
Develop and maintain a portfolio of leadership-level annual donors who make gifts of $10,000 annually and/or show the potential to make a major gift to the Lab in the future.
Identify and cultivate new prospects capable of gifts of $10,000-$100,000.
Work closely with prospect management staff to ensure a regular review
Desired Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of five to eight years’ experience in a fundraising environment.
Demonstrated experience overseeing a direct response program.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies including annual donors, volunteers, faculty and others.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Proven leadership and management skills.
Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team with diverse individuals.
Flexible and self-directed with exceptional organization and time management and prioritization skills and the ability to create and manage efficient systems in a fast-paced environment.
Superior computer skills including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and/or fundraising database(s) and project management software preferred.
Proven experience in business communications, public relations/marketing and financial/budget management.
Ability to provide a positive, customer service oriented outlook.
Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
Ability to act independently and make decisions as required in the absence of the Vice President.
