Director - Donor Communications - Environmental Defense Fund - New York
Job description
Lead the donor communications group in supporting development’s and EDF’s goals. Work with executive team, program and development staff to produce well-articulated, compelling visions designed to inspire large philanthropic investments. Ensure that donors receive regular progress updates on the results achieved with their gifts. Develop a communications plan for prospective donors. Provide leadership, training, management and quality control to donor communications staff of four writers and one coordinator. Identify new ways to improve the quality, efficiency and productivity of the donor communications group’s and development’s work.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Overseeing the production of proposals, funding menus, reports, fact sheets, brochures, donor emails, teleconference scripts, PowerPoints and other communications
Identifying needs for new or revised materials; creating new ways to communicate with high-capacity donors and prospects
Assigning projects and managing donor communications staff priorities; providing quality control and editing all donor communications; training writers and giving them constructive feedback; pinch-hitting on writing projects as needed
Becoming well-versed in all EDF program work and keeping current
Developing productive working relationships with program and development staff across the organization, ensuring a clear understanding of the purpose of the donor communications group
Making sure that all development staff have access to the program information they need to fundraise successfully, through the project space, internal emails, in-person updates by program staff, and other means
Creating and implementing systems improvements that improve the quality, efficiency and productivity of the donor communications group’s and development’s work
Carrying out special projects that will add value for the department or the organization.

Desired Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher
Minimum of 8 years experience with some combination of communications, editing, fundraising, policy or advocacy work
Sophisticated, strategic thinking; creativity; energy; intellectual curiosity with the ability "to tell the story" in a compelling and clear fashion
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional editing ability
Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and synthesize complex information
Strong project management skills; experience at a fast-paced work environment, coming up to speed quickly and juggling multiple assignments on deadline
A proven track record of success in managing staff; the motivation to be an inspirational, supportive leader who gives constructive and timely feedback
The motivation and skill to develop relationships and work collaboratively across a large organization
Familiarity with environmental issues a plus
