Director - Design - Webb deVlam - Chicago


Job description
We are looking for a Director of Design – Product Experience who will be responsible for inspiring, leading and directing packaging innovation strategy and development for Webb deVlam clients. This role is also responsible for providing oversight and quality control on client projects, leading and mentoring a team of industrial designers and serving as a go-to resource for project managers. The Director of Design – Product Experience, will be expected to work closely between clients to create, understand and manage the implications of their design requests, and the team to respond with innovative design solutions. In this role, it is important to have proven experience with:

Product and packaging innovation: developing compelling consumer experiences to differentiate our client’s businesses and brands.
Technical expertise: understanding product design manufacturing methods and limitations to provide realistic plans from concept to completion.
- Design strategy: articulating (words and visuals) the vision and drafting a design brief
- Brand strategy: understanding and translating the aspirations of a brand
- Industry appropriate tools: utilizing the best available to create and execute great work

The Director of Design – Product Experience will also be a part of the management team and will be expected to participate in company management meetings, providing input and advice, working to continuously improve Webb deVlam as a whole in regards to quality of service, exceeding clients expectations, project profitability, contribution to company values and employee satisfaction.

Desired Skills and Experience
Portfolio showing proven ability in innovative product/packaging/brand design
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or related field; Master’s degree preferred
Minimum 15 years of professional experience in packaging, industrial design and branding
Minimum 7 years successfully leading a team of industrial designers
Minimum 7 years working with clients in a lead role
Fluency with Solidworks and Maya
Fluency in graphics software, especially Adobe CS, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign
Familiarity with the potential of other design software, including Hypershot
Ability to pencil sketch and/or marker rendering
Excellent conceptual thinking skills
Experience at a service agency; design, architectural or engineering company experience preferred
Experience conducting research and competitive analysis
Computer literacy required, including familiarity of Apple Mac laptop; fluency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Keynote
Proven ability to successfully manage/maintain client relationships, along with the ability to influence decisions and negotiate as required
Proven ability to successfully lead and grow a team of industrial designers
Solid understanding of the creative process
Proven ability to create, produce and deliver client presentations
Ability to professionally manage through conflict
Ideation, brainstorming, and problem solving ability
Ability to communicate visually using graphics software, especially Adobe CS
Aesthetic and strategic evaluation of design work
Knowledge of branding and package design, both 2D and 3D
Fluency in business and design terminology
Ability to build rapport and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, and with all levels within the organization
Good problem solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in time critical situations
Comfortable working within a fast-paced, dynamic environment
