eBay is the world's largest online marketplace with over $175B of annual commerce volume and $15B in revenues. eBay Advertising is building ad targeting technologies to connect consumers across the web with relevant products and offers while utilizing the commerce data generated from the activity of 100s of millions of visitors to ebay.com and other eBay companies. The ad targeting platform is developed by a talented team of engineers and researchers located in Brisbane, CA. eBay is looking for a director of engineering to lead the development of product listings ad platform.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Complete ownership of engineering, including architecture, design and development
Guide development of software systems and algorithms for ad targeting using search keywords and purchase intent data on 100s of millions of consumers on the web
Guide development of algorithms and software infrastructure scalable to billions of ad requests per day across data centers and continents
Innovate in the areas of search engine relevance, audience profiling, ad targeting, campaign and price optimization, and campaign and audience analytics
Partner with product management to gather competitive intelligence information and influence product roadmap
Evaluate options to build, buy, partner; recommendation to CTO and executive team
Provide guidance on quality engineering and rapid deployment of software
Represent engineering organization for eBay Commerce Network in cross functional teams and deliver on the product roadmap
Influence product definition, present status and point-of-view to executive team
Help sales and business development teams understand the product and technology and guide them on leveraging it to the maximum
Actively engage other eBay technology organizations to integrate and leverage their technologies, data and infrastructure
Recruit top talent and coach on career development
Manage engineering and research team or about 35 employees and 15 contractors in the Bay Area and offshore
Report to CTO of eBay Advertising
12+ years of software development experience mostly on algorithmic backend systems
5+ years of experience recruiting, managing and coaching high quality engineering teams
5+ years of experience developing high performance, distributed, data and algorithms oriented systems like ad servers, search engines, operating systems, communication servers, database kernels, distributed systems
Experience building online advertising technologies such as ad server, RTB exchange, DSP, bidder and data management is highly desirable
Experience with big data and analytics systems is a strong plus
Knowledge of server hardware, data center operations and deployments is a plus
Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality complex software releases on time, within budget in fast paced environment required
Basic knowledge of statistics and data analytics is desirable
Proven track record of fast learning, innovation, strategic thought leadership and teamwork
Strong analytical, data driven decision making and problem solving with attention to details
Ability to navigate large organizations, develop relationships and build network
Outstanding influencing, communication and presentation skills
4-year degree bachelor degree required. Higher education in computer science preferred
