Director - Welding Management & Technology - Trinity Industries - Dallas, Fort Worth


Job description
In this newly created position, the Director, Welding Management & Technology will be charged with providing oversight and strategic direction for overall company weld management at Trinity Industries.
The Key Responsibilities Include:
To provide uniform, coordinated direction of the company’s short and long range welding management goals. Will lead and manage Trinity’s weld management system.
.Establish welding training programs and provide necessary training to manufacturing welding personnel to support weld management.
Works with Director, Welding Compliance & Applications:
Coordinate with Business Unit, Plant and QA personnel to ensure workers’ compliance with established welding procedures and standards; in testing welds for conformance with code and customer requirements; and testing welding personnel for certification.
Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment for fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of regulatory requirements, product specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles. Ensures welding processes and equipment are adequate to produce high quality welds; works with Manufacturing and Facilities/Tooling Group to resolve equipment/parameter problems.
Establishes special welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel when unique/new to company specifications are required. This could include special material selection (special alloys), pre-heating requirements, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post-weld heat treatment requirements.
Prepares technical welding related comments for documents referenced in proposals. Reviews engineering drawings to assure they provide for economic welding fabrication of high quality.
Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, and develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques and procedures. Prepares technical reports as a result of research and development investigations.
Responds to shop welding and welding metallurgical problems to effectively resolve the problem and yet maintain work within the bounds of the company’s contractual obligations.
Maintains membership and active participation within industry associations such as AWS, AAR and ASME. Contacts personnel of other agencies, regulatory engineering personnel, or customers to exchange ideas, information or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.

Desired Skills and Experience
Education and Skills Required for Consideration:
Bachelor’s Degree required. Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or other Engineering field
Must have strong working knowledge of Codes and Standards, specifically AWS, AAR, ASME, AISC and ABS. Membership and participation in applicable Industry associations is preferred.
>10 Years Welding Experience with diverse Code background
Strong mechanical aptitude, thorough understanding of mechanical design; knowledge of manufacturing operations; practical knowledge of materials science, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and electricity/electronics.
Rail Industry, Custom Pressure Vessel, Marine, and/or Structural Fabrication experience a plus
