Director, External Communications Allianz Life - Greater Minneapolis - St. Paul



Job Description

Job Purpose/Role
The Director of External Communications is responsible for public relations and communications to support
the company's market position, corporate strategies and initiatives. Working with executive leadership, the
director will create and administer external communications programs, create and influence key messages,
write communications, train and prepare spokespeople, and disseminate information through external
communications vehicles. The person will promote and protect the Allianz brand and reputation through
proactive and strategic communications programs that influence and reinforce key messages to external
stakeholders via proactive media outreach and social media channels. The director will also provide
strategic counsel and lead efforts to handle crisis communications situations, strategically monitor press
coverage of Allianz and its competitors, and alert senior management to external challenges that may
confront the organization.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications - Develop, manage & execute strategic external communications plan to support
specific business units.
- Manage and execute proactive and responsive PR activities that support company's vision, mission,
strategies and key business goals.
- Develop presentations and write speeches, by-lined articles, etc., to promote products and services.
- Develop relationships with journalists; serve as spokesperson.
- Assist with the execution of crisis/sensitive communications.
- Provide media coaching & guidance for leaders.
External Communications - Develop and implement consistent and innovative external communications
approaches, processes and tools. This includes, but is not limited to, PR plans, crisis communications, talking
points, press releases, and presentations. Specifically:
- Provide high-level communications counsel to executives and leaders at Allianz Life in product line,
distribution, and support divisions regarding a wide range of business issues.
- Develop and execute social media outreach program.
- Effectively leverage multiple channels such as social media, meetings, fact sheets, and press releases.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with trade and industry media as well as key industry
influencers.
- Collaborate with colleagues at other Allianz of America companies, including those in Marketing,
Government Affairs and Legal, to develop shared communications strategies as appropriate. Support
distribution of Allianz Group Communications tactics to Allianz Life employees and the media; partner with
Group Communications colleagues as appropriate.
- Develop a PR platform that establishes a strong media understanding of Allianz Life and its business.
- Develop media plans to support key events (product launches, significant customer wins, and key industry
events).
- Develop messaging and content for announcements and presentations, write positioning papers, and
generate high-level business media opportunities and analyst attention.
- Assess competitors in the marketplace and implement plans to respond appropriately.

Leadership - responsible for the growth & development of direct reports, as well as promoting a positive
work environment for Corporate Communications. Foster the Allianz culture, values and principles.
Budget - Responsible for supervision of budget including forecasting, controlling and reporting for external
communications
Crisis Management/Miscellaneous - Work as key contact for Crisis Management issues and collaborate on
special projects as directed.

Desired Skills & Experience

Key Requirements/Skills/Experience
Minimum Requirements:
- 10+ years experience in PR, corporate communications, or related roles
- Minimum of 3 years supervisory management experience
- Minimum of 5 years in financial media relations
- Four-year degree required: Bachelor's Degree in PR, Communications and/or Journalism or equivalent; MBA desirable

Preferred:
- 11+ years experience preferred
- Advanced degree preferred
