Key Responsibilities:

Own evolution of data science roadmap and manage major initiatives and milestones around modeling for various areas such as discovery, marketing and teaching & learning. This will involve cross functional team collaboration (involving remote teams), resource allocation, development, and production model deployment.
Own Udemy’s data science modeling infrastructure and defines model building and hand-over process with Data engineering team and other engineering stakeholders.
Manage 5+ team leads/members in our San Francisco office. Set goals for each team member based on company initiatives and manage and mentor them to effectively deliver on those goals through technical leadership, personal coaching, and collaboration. Put metrics in place to measure quality and quantity of contributions.
Recruit, hire, and retain a credible team that meets delivery commitments while being responsive to product and business teams.
Continue to challenge status quo in terms of development processes and best engineering practices. Promote healthy debates around new tools and processes and champion changes that have positive impact.
Build a team culture that values quality, robustness, and scalability of our data science approach while fostering initiatives and innovation.
Grow and mentor leaders within the engineering organization.
Foster fun, friendly, and collaborative team environment for retention and recruiting.
Work with internal and external recruiters to attract high quality candidates. Oversee the hiring process to fill open positions while strengthening the team diversity and capacity.
Engage and participate in external data science meetups and events to promote Udemy engineering brand as a great place to work. Give tech talks or organize data scientist panels.
Publish in conferences, writing data blogs and so on to make Data Science work at Udemy more visible.
Qualifications:

PhD or equivalent experience in computer science or a quantitative field. PhD preferred
10+ years of experience in industry experience, preferably in high traffic consumer internet services
5+ years proven leadership experience, hiring, coaching, developing and engaging data scientists or engineers
Strong understanding of statistics, machine learning and natural language processing
Familiarity with coding and engineering implementation
