Public Affairs Director Customs And Trade Facilitation UPS Brussels

The Director, Customs and Trade Facilitation is responsible for developing strategy in the area of customs and trade facilitation policy and acting as the interface for UPS with relevant European government bodies to advance UPS’s objectives. The Manager holds a role within the UPS Europe Region Public Affairs team and can be based in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands or the UK.
Job Responsibilities:
Craft effective strategies to inform key stakeholders in governments on ways to improve border management and trade facilitation for the benefit of UPS and its customers, as well as the broader economy.
Provide innovative ideas to address pressing commercial and public policy challenges and be a thought leader internally and externally.
Can-do attitude critically important, as well as ability to be self-directed and to act independently.
Build internal and external support for ideas around border management, and execute advocacy strategies to advance these ideas to successful conclusions.
Actively participate in internal business decisions and provide your unique expertise to ensure that decisions take account of external factors that might positively or negatively impact their success.
Identify relevant European policy developments/proposals that could impact UPS, and identify opportunities to create better value for UPS and our customers.
Assesses the impact, develops strategies, and executes the external advocacy activities to defend UPS’s interest in the public policy debate.
Identify and proactively engage with key stakeholders (elected officials, civil servants, non-government organizations, and associations) that are critical to current and future UPS business needs
Work collaboratively with functions within UPS such as Finance, Sales and Engineering to advise as a subject matter expert on customs and trade facilitation, to seek input on impact and to identify possible solutions to present to government authorities.
Identify opportunities and provide support to Senior Executives to engage in policy discussions with public officials.
Actively stay informed and current on customs and trade facilitation policy issues and keep internal stakeholders informed on a timely basis on changes/opportunity related to policy development in this area.
Actively participate and lead trade association committees to address policy issues where the industry is aligned on position.
Applies knowledge of the separate realms of public and government policy, procedure, and politics, and the dynamics of their interplay to advance UPS goals, interests, and objectives.
Upholds the highest ethical standards at all times and with high integrity.

Profile:
Bachelor's Degree or International Equivalent. A focus in the area of international trade or customs affairs is an asset.
Knowledge of current customs legislation and upcoming regulatory changes including the Union Customs Code (UCC) and Brexit.
Strong understanding of the EU regulatory process related to customs policy development in Europe and where possible at a global level, as well as the practices in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Israel, Russia, and Turkey.
Awareness and understanding of current significant customs programs and upcoming regulatory changes such as updates to the Customs Union Code and cross border import customs assessments.
Excellent writer and verbal communicator. Ability to synthesize complex issues to form coherent and consistent positions.
Strong leadership skills. This role requires the ability to collaborate, influence and lead functions outside of a direct reporting line.
Ability to anticipate future customs affairs issues and advocate proactive activities to address identified issues. A recognized thought leader outside of UPS.
Fluent in English. Additional languages are highly desirable.
