Design Activation Director Microsoft Redmond

This role is in the Windows Design Studio, leading an integrated team to explore and define new product experiences and develop new design capabilities with a focus on AI and Machine Learning. As the design leader for Design Activation, you will be responsible for creating the vision for the next shift in computing for millions of people across devices phones, tablets, PC, game consoles, and across context bringing together hardware and software. We’re seeking a highly capable, talented and engaged design leader to help inspire and lead through storytelling and customer focus to help evolve the way we develop our products. We partner closely with research, business and engineering teams to envision, prototype, design, define, validate and deliver digital + analog experiences that are effortless, intuitive, delightful and unified.

This Design leader will create the stories for Design Activation programs with consistent voice, tone, and feel; helping to build our brand through authentic artifacts and products that deliver measurable positive impact to our customers lives.

The candidate should have deep passion for storytelling, education/teaching, digital culture, social connectivity, customers? behaviors, AI, natural language interaction, data driven design and the experience working with diverse teams and incubating new business models and practices. They must have a passion for leading and inspiring a team of talented and multi discipline creators, championing, creating energy, and nurturing the designers and culture in the Studio. They must have a clear understanding of each phase of the design process - analysis + framing, information architecture + interaction design, device + industrial design, research + usability, rapid prototyping, visual + motion design, brand integration and content creation. Along with the passion to create new design methodologies and tools that will enables teams across MS and across disciplines to delivering more intelligent and engaging experiences for our customers.

Detailed responsibilities will include:

•Lead team with clarity and energy driving successful execution of design across all Design Activations experiences at Microsoft focusing on AI and Machine Learning as key enablers in how we design and what we create.

•Stimulate the design culture in the broader studio and help us continue to retain and attract diverse design talent

•Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (engineering, design, marketing, research) across Microsoft from creative concepting through to final deliverables

•Bring user-driven culture into our product thinking and making, acting as the voice of the customer in all efforts; building and championing inclusive experiences all our customers will love

•Be the storyteller who inspires teams with a product vision that guides the team forward

•Advocate for the Design vision and ensuring the product direction is aligned with business needs

•Facilitate experiential learning and grow the design team’s EQ & IQ

•Develop a design curriculum to bring new design capabilities to our teams

•Working with our data science teams and Microsoft research to connect our advance technologies into our product programs.

Qualifications:

•The candidate should have experience designing innovative consumer software experiences, have extensive knowledge of natural user interface (NUI) paradigms and have demonstrable experience in designing experiences with multiple input modalities.

•A history with consumer hardware and consumer software is preferred.

•The candidate should have demonstrated ability to effectively partner with cross-disciplinary leaders and staff from engineering, design, and research.

•Shipping isn’t the only success factor. The ideal candidate also must be a great creator, collaborator, communicator and coach. This design team is as diverse as it is talented; this candidate will inspire and get the best from them.

Detailed requirements include:

•A minimum of 7 years of experience as an Executive Design Manager or equivalent role

•Industry Design leader with demonstrated organizational leadership capabilities and recognize by industry as a thought leader

•Experience in the design of a consumer experiences (software, mobile, web, other media) with an emphasis on conceptual, visual, interaction, design and strategy

•Design Instructor and educator experience

•Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail

•Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), excellent presentation abilities

•Ability to design around roadblocks and an aptitude to deliver solutions rather than compromises

•A propensity to lead and inspire both their own teams as well as peers across large organizations

•Understanding the array of technical constraints, user goals and business requirements that shape a product

•Demonstrated ability to work confidently with Program Management, Development, Product Planning, Brand, Marketing and Usability

•Proficiency with Photoshop and Illustrator with an good understanding of rapid prototyping platforms such as Sketch, Framer and After Effects

•A minimum of a BA/BS degree in Interface Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Communication Design, Architecture or equivalent

•A portfolio review will be required for all candidate interviews
