Director Video Players For Amazon Video Seattle

Continuing to innovate and delight our customers is our passion. We are expanding the senior product and technical leadership to ensure our strategy and organization maximizes the historic opportunity we have to deliver on the future of video entertainment. This new leader will be responsible for development of the media players for all platforms, integration of players with client applications, integration of players with 3P platform layers (some cases at chipset level). The leader will be responsible for technical strategy, architecture, development and the testing of the media players. The leader will be responsible for the players that should be scalable across a range of Amazon devices, mobile devices and platforms, browsers, game consoles, TV, Blu Ray players, set top boxes and other connected media devices, that are used by our customers globally. The leader will be responsible for building technical leadership relationships with our key device partners that will allow us to innovate to provide the best media viewing experience for our customers. This leader will obsess in continually raising the bar in improving Amazon Video streaming experience for our customers.
The leader needs to be an operationally and technically deep, customer experience visionary who is as equally at ease at driving excellence in process design as in technical solutions and product definition. This person needs to be proven at leading a large team and will lead a team of around 60-75 with influence over large engineering team outside with partners. This role will report to the Global Head of Digital Video Playback and Delivery and will be based in Seattle.

Objectives

Key Strategic Objectives
World’s Best Video Playback Experience – we intend to have the world’s best playback experience on the largest selection of devices in every locale where we operate. We are currently live in around 200 countries. To achieve our objectives, we will need to continue to innovate and implement the best media player, that can easily scale across a range of platforms, and will provide the best experience for our customers.

Next Generation Media Player – while the Amazon Video business continues to grow and reach customers in different locales, we are constantly challenged with the need to support different devices. To provide the best experience for our customers, we embed our player at the firmware level with our partners. We want to build our next generation player that will be shared across platforms, componentized, easily updateable, uses latest technologies and built using an highly extensible architecture that will allow us to scale for the future.

Focus and Deliverables for first 12 Months
As we expand our service into around 200 countries, innovate new technologies, the leader should drive the launch of our next generation media player. While, we have an excellent streaming experience for customers, the leader will drive innovation and implementation of new technologies to further improve our experience not only for Video On Demand content, but also for Live content, globally.
Basic Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Required - Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering
Preferred - MBA or advanced degree in Computer Science or Engineering

Experience
The candidate must have large-scale, proven engineering expertise where s/he played a leading role in both setting product and technical strategy ideally for media playback, and in owning day-to-day technical operations for a consumer service that was used by millions of customers. Experience with device/platform technologies a plus.
Other key traits include:
Has led software engineering teams in delivering a commercially successful consumer technology product
Has held senior leadership role(s) in large firms but also been an entrepreneur
Has lead teams of at least 75-100 people and scaled teams 25%-30% per year
