Managing Director Global Leveraged Lending Approver Citi New York

The Global Leveraged Lending Approver works closely with Capital Markets, Investment Banking, Corporate Banking, and Industry and Regional Risk teams to make approval decisions for underwritings and holds on traditional leveraged lending transactions, refinancings, and amendments. For those transactions that are recommended, the Leveraged Lending Approver will facilitate senior Business and Risk Management approval. This role is expected to provide leadership on risk and diligence issues, industry trends, capital structure, exposure management, syndication strategy, terms, and returns.

A critical objective is to provide management and guidance such that this high risk business remains within appropriate risk tolerances. While the large majority of the activity takes place in the U.S., approvals are also provided for transactions in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Under the expanded regulatory leveraged lending definition, this function serves to coordinate various firm-wide processes for High Grade and other Non-Investment Grade clients. The Leveraged Lending Approver demonstrates responsible behavior by both tone and actions in daily management. The position reports to the head of Global Industries within Risk Management (Global Industries & Regional Credit).
Key Responsibilities:
Manage greenlight (screening) reviews and approvals for non-investment grade holds and underwritings
Exercise leadership to address due diligence, capital structure, and syndication issues
Work globally with partners in Independent Risk Management, Banking, CMO, AAG, ABL, CCO, FIRM, Real Estate, and IRM
Protect the firm against franchise and reputation risk
Make recommendations, on transactions above specified amounts, to senior management regarding credit approvals and declines
Assess financings with respect to earning threshold returns on capital
Handle requests for ancillary facilities such as derivatives, cash management, and international lines
Oversee underwriting limit compliance and develop solutions to mitigate potential excesses
Coordinate with Leveraged Portfolio Group on portfolio management and reporting
Provide updates to management committees and Board of Directors
Execute reporting and sustainability phases of Leveraged Lending Guidance
Monitor syndicate book and aged underwritings
Manage regulatory interactions
Communicate regulatory updates to internal constituencies
Coordinate regulatory examinations as well as reviews by internal audit groups
Provide support for stress tests, CCAR, and other internal processes
Develop skills of junior staff across the organization though training and transactions
Write periodic updates to Credit Policy relating to leveraged lending

Qualifications


Competencies/Knowledge:
Unquestioned ethics
Understanding of heightened regulatory expectations of Citi
Excellent credit judgment on non-investment grade credits
Solid knowledge of high yield syndication markets
Appropriate risk appetite with respect to size of individual underwritings, overall book of deals, leverage levels, and hold positions
Commitment to independent views but willingness to compromise and be transparent in decision-making
Decisive leadership for developing solutions in an environment with aggressive client requests
Discipline in making appropriate risk-reward decisions
Understanding of deal rationale from perspective of private equity sponsor
Robust collaboration across the firm with a wide range of bankers
Ability to manage varied teams that are formed on a deal-by-deal basis
Strong influencing and negotiating skills
Outstanding conflict management skills
Superior verbal and written communication skills
Well-developed time management skills for a high volume of transactions, often with short timetables

Adherence to senior management directives, regulatory guidance, and control functions
Qualifications:
Current SCO 1 or 2 approval authority
Current title of Managing Director, or Director with expectation of appointment to Managing Director in the near term
At least 15 years of business and risk experience over several economic cycles
Multiple, successful risk management roles over time spanning a range of products, industries, and geographies
Strong knowledge of corporate finance concepts
Bachelor's Degree Required, Advanced degree in finance or economics preferred
