The Director of Livesite Hardware Support is the key leader responsible for enabling a new team to utilize Azure software layers to bridge the gap to preventing, identifying, and mitigating server hardware issues impact Microsoft’s cloud server infrastructure, one of the largest in the world. This role is critical to the success of our cloud services, including Bing, Azure, Office365, Xbox Live and dozens of other online services.

The Hardware Quality and Sustaining Engineering Team (HQSE) within CSI-E (Cloud Server Infrastructure Engineering) is responsible for quality and sustaining of the millions of servers that run the Microsoft Cloud. We provide engineering subject matter expertise to resolve systemic issues to drive continuous improvements in the quality of deployed hardware and embedded software.

To support this effort, we are looking for a dynamic, experienced, and hands-on Leader for a new team based in Redmond. This team will be responsible for bridging the gap on how our Cloud software layers identify and react to hardware issues; identify, profile, mitigate, and resolve issues impacting production; provide complex software debug between embedded firmware, chassis manager, drivers, operating system, Azure fabric controller & Diagnostic modules. This high-profile position will challenge the technical and leadership skills of the successful candidate while providing regular Azure executive level engagement. Roles and Responsibilities – Directly contribute and lead the team to:
• Define strategy and lead effort through Azure software layers to prevent, identify & resolve Cloud Server Hardware issues
• Work with Microsoft internal teams to support Server Operations through Diagnostic and Deployment tools
• Interface and interact with servers and infrastructure through the management network to root cause server fleet issues to minimize server downtime
• Triage and document bugs and drive to resolution
• Focus on continuous improvement through optimized level process and procedures
• Support large scale server deployments and problem resolution through tools and automation (scripting) using C, C++, C#, PowerShell, Python or Perl
• Attract, hire, develop, and manage senior engineers as a cohesive, high performing team

Skills & Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science or greater in Electrical/Computer Engineering or Computer Science
• Must have strong distributed systems knowledge; Cloud, HPC, Azure, Hadoop, server architecture etc.
• Demonstrable knowledge of public or private cloud infrastructure deployment and management software, tools and processes
• 5+ years of experience successfully driving urgent or high-visibility technical issues to closure, (design, development, systems, test, debug)
• 5+ years of experience managing development engineers or sustaining engineers
• 2+ years hands on Design and Programming skills with C, C++ or C# and scripting skills with PowerShell, Python or Perl is essential
• Strong grasp of key technologies in servers such as CPU, motherboards, BIOS, BMC, remote management, memory, storage sub-system is a plus
• Hands on experience of operating in Windows Server 2012 environment and imaging tools (System Center, WDS etc.) is essential. Experience with Linux is a plus
• Experience with complete SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) is a plus
• Proven ability to plan, schedule, and deliver high quality software
• A passion for working with customers
