Responsible for all aspects of the site’s engineering product development activities; focusing on the structure and operation of the product development engineering function as a cohesive unit, day-to-day management of simultaneous projects, delivering designs to agreed specifications within time and budget constraints, and the creation of innovative solutions that align with Flex Sketch-to-Scale model and our evolving customer needs.

Principal Accountabilities:

Serve as leader of the management team that sets the site’s strategic direction.
Drive the plan to grow the Silicon Valley Design Center engineering team; recruiting and hiring towards a team size of 45 engineers.
Set direction and control of product development activities.
Formulate long-term objectives, standards, and performance metrics for the site.
Assure that the site achieves objectives and project completion within budget and time constraints.
Be a student of current industry trends, ensuring that the company maintains and expands its technology leadership position.
Motivate staff and provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management, recognizing the role as that of both manager and support resource/mentor.
Assure that products are designed for specific needs, but with wider applications in mind.
Hire and direct Management staff, Principal engineer(s) and Subject Matter Experts to acquire necessary resources to meet customer commitments.
Ensure implementation and refinement of formal processes to support the product development process.
Ensure that product development is focused on meeting and exceeding customer requirements.
Drive engineering rigor and disciplined design & qualification processes across all engineering functional areas
Ensure smooth transition and ramp of new designs into manufacturing, build strong relationships with factory management
Drive innovative and cost effective product solutions of varying scope in order to meet customer requirements from concept to development of conceptual prototypes; and architecture through development into full-scale production
Drive technical strategy to meet future business & customer needs, participate in strategy development with account & customer executives
Be part of the product and technology strategic planning effort and as ambassador to the greater Silicon Valley ODM/JDM ecosystem
Work with start-ups and large Bay Area companies
Leading the team to act as the key architects and engineering experts as a gateway into the rest of the Flex Innovation and New Ventures design organization.
Implement appropriate HR Strategies and actions to recruit and retain a qualified and motivated workforce
Manage administration of the site to ensure that it is safe, secure, and well-maintained.
Education / Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline. MBA is desirable.
Typically requires 15+ years of product design, engineering and manufacturing experience.
A proven track record of participating in multiple product development life cycles.
Typically requires at least 7+ years of management or supervisory experience.
Successfully led a design and development engineering team at a mid-large sized Company
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Strong technical background and product development experience and production environment. Requires strong innovation skills and creativity.
Experience in some of these industries: communications, wearables, energy, consumer products, cloud computing, connected livings and high volume connected products.
Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-functional engineering team (electrical, mechanical, software, firmware development, and product validation teams).
Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills.
Requires excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and networking abilities.
Effective interpersonal skills with ability to negotiate and influence for positive outcomes. Ability to influence and hold others accountable.
Business acumen and proven ability to manage key financial results. Utilize tools to monitor departmental cost and cost trends, striving to continuously improve value.

Establishes and ensures achievement of objectives and strategic plans for the site.
Develops plans for organizational structure to support business needs and major initiatives.

Ability to make tough decisions, take risks and be accountable for actions. Decisions will affect site performance and strategic direction.
