Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. (SSI) is currently looking for a Director of University Relations for our eight US-based R&D groups, which include the software-intensive Memory Solutions Lab, Device, the Display Lab, the New Memory Technology Lab, semiconductor R&D labs Austin Research Center and Advanced Logic Lab, the Advanced Image Research Lab, and the Modem Lab – and also including the related Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC).

The candidate will play an important role of providing leadership for the University Relations team as well as closely working with the rapidly growing SSI R&D labs and SSIC

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

· University Relations

o Supervise and contribute to the team that is tasked with building and enhancing long-term relationships with universities and professors across the US.

o Work with the US-based SSI R&D groups, human resources, and the SSIC to identify their research collaboration and recruiting needs and act or delegate to ensure these needs are met.

o Work with Samsung technical and other group leaders and enable exchange meetings with high-level university relations personnel in other Samsung divisions (Device Solutions HQ, SAIT, SRA-SV, SEA, etc.) to develop and synergistically manage research collaborations and corporate affiliate program memberships. Continually update on the evolution of university relations best practices and make recommendations for improvement at SSI, SSIC, and the wider Samsung business units.

o Engage in self-driven learning to maintain early awareness of new technology innovations. Report to principal technical employees on these technologies and related startup companies, and ensure completion of follow-up actions to internalize for Samsung engagement.

o Lead the organization of workshops and forums on important technological topics, hosted at our labs and involving leading professors in their respective fields.

o Organize monthly newsletters reporting on University Relations activities to our employees.

o Organize regular invited lectures from professors aligned with Samsung lab interests to engage Samsung employees interested in learning about key research.

o Identify and monitor university-related spinouts for potential investment by Samsung. Prepare investment theses and proposals for investment candidates.

· Open Innovation

o Act as long-term interface and operations manager for Silicon Valley pathfinding committee by working with R&D, Sales & Marketing and SSIC team leaders to define new market opportunity and go-to-market strategy for Datacenter, Consumer Electronics, IoT, Smart Machine, Smart Health. The goal is to utilize these technologies to capture greater value for Samsung’s future business.

o Manage and operate pathfinding committee meetings and drive collaborations to establish new business opportunities resulting from industry and players trends findings and strategic discussions.

o Define ecosystem and collaboration partner strategy required for successful introduction of products & services incorporating new technology.

o Identify and track startups working in fields related to new technology and systems. Monitor status of other companies and competitors working in these areas.



REQUIRED SKILLS

· M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.

· 10+ years of industry experience in university relations, technology transfer, research operations or related work

PREFERRED SKILLS

· Possess a deep and broad network of relationships with universities, professors, research institutes, technology transfer offices, and corporate relations offices.

· Possess excellent technical knowledge on a wide variety of topics, and the ability to rapidly learn about new topics rapidly and independently.

· Exhibit strong vision and motivation, along with excellent interpersonal and presentation skills and attention to detail.

· Have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including coordinating across organizational boundaries and geographies.

· Exhibit strong leadership skills and high ethical standards.

Other Conditions:

· Approximately 10-25% travel will be required to initiate and maintain relationships, and attend relevant conferences and workshops to maintain technical expertise in lab-related fields.
