Newsela is seeking an outgoing, innovative and passionate leader to join our Operations team. The Director of People and Culture will lead the Human Resource Department with a proactive approach and gracious attitude effectively mentoring, coaching and developing the Human Resource Team. He/She will be a proactive business partner to the Company’s leadership team in support of the Company's objectives, mission and values.

To be successful in this role you should have experience in a fast-growing technology startup and understand the demands and tasks that come about with a company in the high growth phase. You will not only have a mastery of traditional HR responsibilities, but experience nurturing a positive, healthy culture.

Responsibilities

Design and implement strategies and programs that benefit Newsela’s employees and enhance our culture, while aligned with overall business goals
Promote a healthy, positive and fun company culture and institutionalize Newsela’s values
Play the role of strategic partner, advisor and coach to our executive leadership team and department heads on all HR related issues, such as performance management, leadership development, and conflict management
Develop and administer policies and programs which allow employees to maximize their contribution to Newsela including performance management, salary review process and career paths
Ensure compliance with all federal and state employment and labor laws
The Ideal Candidate

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field
7+ years of proven success in Human Resource leadership roles
Proven ability to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of labor laws and HR best practices
Proven ability to understand strategic organizational issues and influence senior leadership
Some Plusses

Master’s degree in Human Resources or related field
Capable and confident communicator with very strong personal presence
Experience in an early-stage, fast growing start-up
