The Director of Laboratory Animal Resources oversees the operation of Laboratory Animal Research and its personnel, and provides assistance with its animal research project. The Director will provide leadership and vision for the institutional animal care and use program, ensuring animal welfare assurance by the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and registration and compliance as a research institution by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The Director reports to Chief Research and Science Officer, works closely and collaboratively with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and serves as an ex officio voting member of the committee. In addition, the Director will work closely with Research Resource Coordinator, Chair of the Research Committee and faculty researchers and staff. Although primarily based out of the Philadelphia campus, the Director will provide input for the design of the Georgia campus’ facility in collaboration with faculty and subcontractors, and be involved in hiring staff for the GA facility



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provides leadership and vision for institutional animal teaching and research programs on PA and GA campuses

· Provides oversight on animal use compliance and standards to CSO, IACUC and Laboratory Animal Research (LAR) team

· Oversees the staff

· Develops the annual budget for the LAR in collaboration with the Chief Research and Science Officer and Research Resource Coordinator

· Provides operational assistance to clinical veterinarian for all animals covered under animal use protocols

· Provides assistance to faculty in selecting animal models, reviewing and advising on the writing and design of animal use protocols

· Interfaces with Facilities Services on design and construction of the LAR on the GA campus

· Participates in the recruitment of staff for the GA LAR

· Serves as a voting member on the IACUC

· Fosters a culture of friendly customer service and compliance

· Provides assistance with LAR related projects

· Provide written and verbal evaluations of the LAR staff

· Communicates with the CRSO, IACUC administrator, faculty researchers, and administrators regarding LAR operations.

· The Director of LAR sets the tone for Animal Resources and is strongly encouraged to promote a friendly, customer service oriented atmosphere and teamwork approach to working with faculty researchers and staff.

Working conditions: Work requires minimal physical exertion. Computer skills and an ability to monitor expenses and develop budgets are essential. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to assist faculty researchers with project design.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science or related biological or management field required
American Association for Laboratory animal Science (AALAS) certification at the laboratory animal technology level preferred and certified Manager of Animal Resources level preferred
Three or more years of administrative, management and supervisory experience in a supervisory or team leader role with multiple direct reports, preferably in an animal research, teaching and/or testing program is required.
Demonstrated leadership abilities and completion of team projects.
Expertise in Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) compliance and policies and the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Familiarity with compliance regulations and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Veterinary Medicine, and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
