AOL’s growing and exciting Technology Business Management (TBM) team is looking for a passionate and experienced leader to help manage AOL’s infrastructure migration efforts and the adoption of a public cloud first strategy across the company. The central technologies organization has a very simple mission, to be the most financially transparent organization within the company.

AOL isn’t unlike many other companies that have had a long and successful run in the technology and media space. We have an expansive base of services that utilize AOL’s massive scale of owned and operated infrastructure, a mix of acquired companies that operate solely on public cloud infrastructure and another bucket of properties that are somewhere in between those two ends of the spectrum. With this role we are looking for someone to help us manage and accelerate the migration of the majority of our services to a public cloud platform, but just as important is to ensure these efforts are being executed in a cost efficient manner and abiding by a set procedures and standards that this role will help to define. Additionally, we will need this person to think strategically about the public cloud landscape to help us stay ahead of industry trends, constantly re-evaluating our long term strategy and helping us pivot if/when needed.
You will be responsible for much more than simply putting some sanity around such big migration efforts. Should you choose to accept this mission you will work closely with key stakeholders within the technologies orgs, legal, finance as well as development and product teams here @ AOL. The position will report directly to the VP of Global Infrastructure & Platform Services.
Key Responsibilities
Central point of contact within AOL for coordinating usage and migration efforts to public cloud providers;
Establish a process by which to track and report on public cloud initiatives across the company, working to leverage best practices and enable the sharing of past experience and knowledge sharing amongst the various teams;
Help to enforce those best practices and standards with internal public cloud users (eg: security);
Be the central point of contact for our public cloud vendors as it relates to coordination and communication w/ all of AOL various brands and services;
Data analysis on cloud utilizations & consumption to develop strategies for the proper mix of on demand vs. committed resources
Financial analysis around existing and future public cloud usage, ensuring we are leveraging open source and other tooling to right size our use of public cloud infrastructure to mirror existing and projected usage (e.g.; modeling before/post costs of moving an application or service to public cloud);
Constant evaluation of the public cloud business and platforms, are we utilizing the best in class service from an operational and financial perspective;
Qualifications
Previous experience in working with public cloud providers, both operationally as well as an understanding of how these services are billed and ultimately consumed;
Relevant experience within a technology organization or in support of a technology organization;
Strong analytical skills for the creation and understanding of complex modeling and forecasting;
Outstanding communication skills for the ability to explain, at all levels of the organization, the output and recommendations, you will need to influence and lead others to follow the guidelines by which this role will help to create;
Good grasp of accounting and finance jargon and how technology efforts like adoption of public cloud ultimately impact AOL’s various businesses unts (you won’t be be asked to prepare a company 10K statement, but you should be able to understand & explain the capex vs. opex impact of a deal for example)
The skill to lead and create consensus around new ideas and initiatives, building confidence in the outcome
Proficient in public cloud billing and technology options, specifically but not necessarily limited to Amazon Web Services. Proficient meaning an understanding of AWS services and how to interpret a large and complex invoice for the purposes of modeling as well as business unit conversations around the correlation of usage → spend.
