The Director of new Student Academic Programs provides collaborative leadership to manage, design and implement programs to support successful academic transition, engagement and persistence of new First Year, transfer and graduate students. As a key member of the Office of Academic Services, the Director works in partnership to design, implement, and assess new student academic advising and related initiatives. The Director works closely with faculty advices and the First Year Seminar (FYS) program, manages new graduate student Orientation and serves as leader in identifying and applying best practices in new student academic programming and First Year and transfer student academic advising.
Essential Functions
Manage, support and assess the University’s First Year Seminar (FYS). Work with students referred by faculty advisors on academic concerns or issues outside of topics covered in FYS. Hire and train undergraduate teaching assistants/peer mentors for the First Year Seminar to assist with course delivery. Manage orientation program for new graduate students. Work with graduate program academic advisors on initiatives to support and retain new graduate students. Plan and deliver academic components of August Undergraduate New Student Orientation. Develop and teach Transfer Seminar. Hire peer mentors for Transfer Seminar. Provide academic advising to First Year and other undergraduate students on a daily basis. Monitor progress reports, academic success and retention of both First Year and new transfer students. Assess effectiveness of current retention programs and develop new programs for transfer and/or First Year students as needed. Work with graduate program advisors to create and develop retention strategies for new graduate students. Work collaboratively across the University with various offices including Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions, Student Affairs, Student Financial Services, Athletics, Service Learning and the Registrar’s Office.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience Requirements)
Master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Counseling, Student Development or other similar field. Five years progressively responsible experience in academic advising, Orientation, graduate student advising, First Year or new student programs, or other related academic or student services work within a college or university setting. Experience working with faculty across a variety of curricular areas. Experience hiring, training and supervising peer advisors/mentors. Ability to structure, collect, and use assessment data to evaluate programs and initiatives, identify areas for development, and enact needed refinements in consultation with campus partners. Excellent written, public presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in developing collaborative efforts directed at student retention at both the graduate and undergraduate level.
Experience working with parents of college students. Ability to provide effective leadership in support of student learning, development, retention, and recruitment with awareness and sensitivity to the needs of diverse student populations.
Familiarity with BANNER student information system or other similar system. Proficiency and interest in working with technology driven academic services systems such as Degree Works, Infosilem and web based Orientation programs.
