Job Description:
Skanska is seeking to hire a Director of Communications for the Skanska-Walsh joint venture.
The Director of Communications reports to the project officer for Skanska-Walsh, the construction joint venture team (CJV) for the multi-year construction project at one of New York City’s busiest airports, and the Senior Director of Communications for the Northeast at Skanska, with frequent interaction with project managers as well as partner and client communications counterparts.
The Director of Communications will be responsible for the day-to-day reporting to the consortium team overseeing the CJV on all aspects regarding Skanska-Walsh and project construction. This position will support several strategic goals including increasing the awareness of the CJV’s work among the consortium team and the public at large; supporting collaboration with all the partners; supporting marketing on a project level; and, engaging the CJV project employees in the overall communication’s strategy and community outreach initiatives.
The Director of Communications’ responsibilities include gathering details for press releases, drafting project executive talking points, assisting with crises, and preparing project executives for all interviews and presentations.
Position Accountabilities:
Daily coordination of construction activities and impacts
Informing consortium/owner communications of upcoming work events, milestones and impacts (lane closures, MOT phases, noisy activities)
Proofing the advisory/press releases about same
Attend consortium/owner communications meetings
Coordination of media inquiries
React to emergency events and coordinate talking points
Manage Community Incident Reports and Business Incident Reports
Coordinate with Skanska Communications on community involvement programs and good news stories about the CJV’s community activities
Charity events
Impacts of local spending and hiring
Community programs, educational opportunities for students
Public outreach, open houses
Publicize charitable events, toy drives, earth day, etc.
Monitoring and resolution of community complaints
Coordinate with the M/WBE outreach program working closely with the project’s community outreach team
Coordination of site tours, events and presentations
Vetting all approvals and content thru Skanska and consortium/owner
Coordinate Skanska-Walsh related items (signage, logos, clothing, etc.) approval via Skanska Communications
Coordinate production of video/photography
Monthly aerial and ground photos
Earth cam and time lapse photos
Manage internal SGL photos files
Coordinate and gather content for articles and features with the CJV team
Construction articles and interesting features and construction stories
Our efforts towards environmental excellence
Project information from subcontractors and vendors (photos, articles, newsletters, etc.) for releases and announcement
Other duties as assigned or required
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field
10+ years’ experience in a similar high volume environment
Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Expertise in both internal and external communications including marketing, public relations, crisis communications, and employee communications
Experience in a public relations firm or experience managing a public relations firm
Background/knowledge of the construction industry, New York City and/or New York State government and New York media is key
Ability to juggle multiple activities and meet deadlines
Highly organized with an attention to detail
Functions effectively as part of a team
Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times
Proactive mindset; a self-starter
