Job Description:
NPR is seeking a Director of Programming Strategy. The successful candidate will be charged with developing NPR’s on-air programming strategy in ways that retain and build audience levels, deliver on power of the NPR brand and reinforce the mission of public radio.
Works with the Vice President of Programming & Audience Development to Development to plan, execute and communicate the network’s overall broadcast program development and audience optimization strategy
Responsible for developing and supporting the overall relationship with acquired program producers. Oversees all production logistics and communications.
Monitors the broadcast ratings and competitive landscape regularly, particularly in the top 20 markets, providing reports, analysis and recommendations to key stakeholders
Partner with NPR’s Member Partnership group to advise on optimal programming strategies, best practices and formattics that can increase stations’ local market share and listeners, ratings, and revenue.
Critiques all acquired shows, provides feedback to show staff, and works with them to develop editorial plans that support audience growth. Provides broad technical and content oversight.
Creates the strategy, sound and production of on-air/digital credits voice and recruit seasoned professionals to execute.
Partners with Business Development to review all contracts and ensure all restrictions and obligations are met.
Communicate programming information to other departments by facilitating weekly launch team meetings, attending sales meetings and coordinating with production departments.
Develops strong working relationship with industry stakeholders in the programming field.
Partner with Member Partnership to strategize on carriage targets and growth of all programming
Work with Digital Services team to ensure that station’s websites, social media activities, and online presence optimize and deepen listener relationships
Assists in budget development and contract execution and compliance.
Required Skills
Major market radio programming experience
Strong creative leadership, Sound judgment and quality decision making skills to plan and accomplish goals.
Ability to multi-task and work with specific deadlines, be highly organized and have good delegation skills.
Ability to gather and analyze data to make sound business decisions.
Flexible, creative, and innovative in using technology to deepen listener relationships.
Skills in broadcasting and understanding of Member Stations’ listening audience.
Ability to manage and motivate staff, in addition to working well as a member of a team
Ability to think both tactically and strategically
Knowledge of all FCC rules and regulations.
Strong analytical skills
Strong familiarity with both PPM and diary ratings methodologies and how it applies to program creation and management
Strong interpersonal skills
Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
