Phunware is seeking a director level leader and senior software engineer in Austin, TX with a proven track record of designing and developing scalable software systems that leverage open source and big data related technologies. The Director’s primary responsibility is to manage, lead, and direct the team dedicated to the server side and big data components of the MaaS platform, as well as bring technical leadership and experience to the team for design and architectural decisions relating to platform enhancements.
The ideal candidate is proactive, responsive, comfortable dealing with ambiguity, experienced with software development and has a strong track record of having deployed highly scalable production code.
Responsibilities:
Direct and provide technical leadership for a 7+ team of senior engineers dedicated to server side and big data components of the MaaS platform.
Work with product management to take detail story driven requirements and work with engineering to help implement them using Agile Test Driven techniques.
Create architectural workflows, diagrams and specification documents to help define platform features/functionality.
Oversee Continuous Integration (CI) efforts and build processes relating to all server side components of the platform.
Work with DevOps regarding the deployment process for all server side environments, including preparing and managing release notes and deployment plans.
Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
Outstanding technical leadership and guidance skills
Strong experience in building highly scalable, redundant, available and responsive systems using open source software tools and technologies
Experience working with Product team members for requirements gathering, and release planning efforts.
8-10 years of professional software development
8-10 years Java / Scala development experience
5+ years in a leadership position leading engineering teams
3+ years Big Data related technologies (Hadoop, Spark, MapReduce, Hive, Cloudera)
Extremely strong SQL skills
Experience doing Test Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration (CI) and test automation.
Experience developing applications that interact with message queues (RabbitMQ or Kafka).
Responsible, organized and hard working with excellent communication skills
Experience with agile development processes, JIRA, Confluence & Slack
Experience with cloud delivery platforms, ideally Amazon
Desirable:
M.S. Degree or higher in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
Experience developing Analytics, Machine Learning algorithms or Natural Language Processing systems.
Extensive experience with Cloudera / Impala
Experience with NoSQL databases like HBase, Cassandra
Comfortable with linux, scripting(shell, python etc)
Comfortable with Node.js
Experience with mobile related technology (iOS/Androd)
