Bloom Energy, a solid oxide fuel cell company, is looking for a Director to lead site and construction design projects leading to successful installation of Bloom servers at customer sites. This role requires a management and optimization of both in-house and outsourced designs to enable construction on time and within budget. This requires a tight coordination with customers and all stakeholders at Bloom, sales, finance, engineering, operations and services on both strategic and tactical levels.
Role and Responsibilities:
Lead a team of mechanical, civil, structural and quality engineers to manage both in-house & outsourced site designs to reduce cycle time and cost for installation of Bloom servers
Make sure that the designs are done ahead of time to help permitting, utilities and construction teams to manage their schedule
Manage end-to-end design process to ensure design and installation accuracy
Develop and maintain standard set of specifications for site designs which includes all aspects of “green” and “brown” installations.
Coordinate with FAEs, Utilities, Permits and Construction teams to ensure quality of design inputs as well as design hand-offs
Ensure all electrical, structural and other construction details are taken care off well in advance in design process with no surprises at the end
Coordinate with customers on site designs to meet their demands and to reduce design review iterations
Collaborate closely with engineering team to incorporate product design changes effectively
Create tools for automatic installation cost estimates based on site design details
Work with Product Management, Sales and Marketing teams to make sure that sites can be designed effectively as well as meet installation budgets
Working with IT team develop necessary tools to enable ease of design, cost estimation and coordination with different stakeholders
Closely coordinate with Program Management Office to coordinate timely deliverables to all groups working on installation.
Desired Skills and Experience
Skills and Experience:
BS or MS in civil engineering with 20+ years of hands on experience in civil, structural and construction design particularly related to placing electrical equipment at customer sites.
Highly motivated individual with experience in managing a large group engineers and contractors.
P & L Experience managing complex projects
Ability to communicate to the team as well executive staff design strategies to meet business plan
Experience in development of storm water management, erosion/sediment control, grading, and drainage plans from concept design through completion.
Knowledge of codes related to construction projects (i.e. IBC, NFPA, NEC, ASCE, AWWA)
Substantive experience with permitting agencies and developing a permit drawing set.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills that include a minimum of the following
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, concise manner for a non-technical audience.
Ability to confidently and clearly define engineering requirements.
Self-starter that shows the ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
